PRUNE YOUNG TREES TO SECURE GOOD SHAPE Raleigh, Dec. 11.— The ideal time lor pruning orchard trees ia in early spring, as wounds made then are not exposed so long before the healing process begins. It is not always prac ticable to do all the pruning at the ideal time, however, and the thrifty orchardist makes use of odd days dur ing the winter to get this work done "Avoid pruning during very cold weather, to prevenit freezing injury to the tender tissues exposed by the cut," advises E. 13. Morrow, extension horticulturist at State College. "Ii pruning newly set trees, or those tha have made one season's growth, an attempt should be made to picture the tree as it will appear in future years, and prune accordingly. Three main branches are sufficient for the initial framework of the tree. Select these properly spaced up and down the trunk and equally dividing the space around the center of the tree. As the tree develops, each of these primary limbs may be allowed to develop into two secondary branches. This gives six brancnes to form the framework of' the tree. Keep these dominant to all other growth, allowing a reasonable number of side branches to develop, li it is desired to subdue the growth of any particular branch or shoot, cut that branch back more than the one intended to mako the greater growth. It is seldom advisable to head young trees bac kto mere stubs. A moderate heading-back is better. "With bearing trees, cut out all de cayed and diseasei branches and re move Uiose that'an* upt to interfere witn the proper u clopment of the framework, 'wita t.i ..pple, make the j'U'..uii., a thinning-out process, ii heading-back seems nec e«-fajy cut to a lateral. With u.e peach, a" combination of heading back and thinning out gives the best results." NEW LADIES' SHQP OPEN IN GREENVILLE in Greenville Mr. Heber Forbes has opened one of the moat up-to-date la ties * shops in this section. He hu a wine lloor apace with velvet ruga to correspond with the iaterior dec orations. A lovely line of women'a clothing ia displayed in the aide cab inets. —_— —- Shopping in this store ia doubly sat isfying.
