Rules Announced For Commencement (Continued from the first page) j. No child Bhould have a story that require* more than 6 minutes in the tailing. 4. Any story may be used, but the —-child should tell it naturally, as he would tell the story of a reading les son and should not try to memorize it word for word. It is recommended that the story be selected from Curry dippiner's "Children's Literature," or from any reading books used dur ing the year. This is not an elocution or reading contest. 6. Each school is entitled to have one representative for each teacher, not to exceed three, at the group-cen .•> ter preliminary. The winner at the group-center preliminary will repre sent the group center at county com mencement. 6. No individual prizes will be awarded. Ribbons will be given at group-center contest and county com mencement. Also points will be awarded at county commencement as in spelling contest above. Arithmetic Contest C 1. The grammar grades (4 through 7) children from all of the schools will compete in this contest. 2. This contest will be used in both the group-center prelinjunaries and a,t the county commencement. The win ner in each group-center contest will go to the county commencement con test. 3. In the group-center contests each school will be entitled to one repre sentative. 4. The contest will be based on ac curacy and speed in the four funda mentals: Addition, subtraction, multi plication, and division. 6. The committee on arithmetic or superintendent will explain how-con test will be conducted in case you do not already know the method used. 6. Ribbons and points will be award ed winners in this contest as stated above. Kules for Contests Which Are Open To Schools of Groups 1 and 2 Only Pageant Contest D -1. Groups 1 and 11 contain list of schools which can enter this contest. 2. Subject matter for pageants should be selected from history, health, growth of school, or be the outgrowth of work dramatized during the school year. No floats or expen sive trappings will be considered by the judges. 3. Points will be awarded schools winning first, second, and third places in this contest. 4. This contest is not confined to any particular grade, but pupils work of fifth grade or above should be pre sented. 6? Pageants will compete only at county commencement. 6. It is suggested that only so many players as can be handled well on the ordinary school stage be presented. Choral Contest E 1. Only Groups I and 11 schools are eligible for this contest. Choral con tests will be held at county com mencement only. 2. Selections must not be more than 6 minutes in length and rendered by not less than l2 nor more than 24 voices. 8. Instrumental accompaniment will b« permitted, but only the singing will be considered in choosing the winner. 4. Selections may be chosen from any source. 5. Points will be awarded to schools winning places in this contest. 6. In case any school of Group II finds it impossible to enter this con test on account of lack of leadership in music, this school will be permitted to take part in the grammar-grade recitation contest in place of the chor al contest. KuUs for Contests Which afe Open to Group ill Schools Grammar-Grade Recitation Contest 1 Group 111 1. Preliminaries will be held at each group center commencement to select a boy" or girl to participate in county commencement contest. 2. No recitation shall exceed eight in length. 3. The committee of the contest and the superintendent will be glad to ad vise with teachers in regard to the se lection of proper material to be used by children taking part in the contest. 4. Group II schools may, with the consent of the superintendent, partici pate in this contest instead of the choral contest 6. At the group center and county commencements points and ribbons will be awarded the winners in this coo test. Staging Contest G, for Group 111 * — Schools Only 1. This contest will be held at the group-center and at the county com mencement also. The school which 1 wins in the group center preliminaries will take part in the county commence ment contest Z. Selections must not be more than Ave minutes in length and rendered by Mt less than six nor more than twelve vofaaa. 5. Only children from the grammar gn may take part in this contest, with mm or two teachers as leaders. 4. The principals oi the group-cen ter schools should arrange an athletic program to suit the schools in their groups 2. A play period for both boys and girls should be arranged by the prin cipals of the group-center school for their rally. Some icacner who has the interest and ability should be appoint ed as game leader. Each school will be expected to give some singing game, such as "The Farmer in the Dell," "Loody-Loo," Clap Partner." Judges will decide which school gives the best performance. For sug gested games see Clark's "Physical Training in the Elementary Schools." Dramatisation ontest H 1. Tliis contest will be held at the group-center commencements only. 2. The participants -in the contest must chosen from the first, second, third, and fourth grades. 3. Any group of children taking part in this contest must be chosen entirely' from one room. 4. Stories dramatized must be, se [ lee ted from Curry-Clippinger's read ing texts or books on the adopted list of the State. &. No dtaiuatizatjon should exceed eight minutes in length. 6. Elaborate costumes will not be permitted. Only such costumes as might be used in a class-room drama tization will be considered suitable. No participant in the dramatization should be allowed to wear a costume which eun not be improved on one day's, notice. Stage settings should be simple.
