Is Best Answer to the Housing Query A Few Shares Will Soon Have You Owning Your Own Home The purchase of a house or of housing -equipment today requires a very large initial outlay. This initial outlay cannot fall below a minimum which it is difficult for 'he mass of breadwinners to accumulate. The range of cost'of materials and labor connected with the construction of a house is limited and fairl constant. However, the need of more homes owned by a greater per cent of our people is fundamental. The improve ment of these housing conditions de pends in a large degree upon social conditions, the attitude of those needing help and economic conditions , According to Harap 54.2 per cent [ ol the dwellings in America are ru j ral and 45.8 per cent are urban. It j would be interesting to learn what j per cent of Martin County homes are located of the small towns. I In the nation at large, 75 per cent of 'all dwellings are found. The pre- I dominant type of farm dwelling in ' America is a five room house, accord- I jng to 1920 census there is 1.18 fam- LARGE FORCE ON MARKET Ordinarily-you would not think so, but there are a good many over 100 people employed on the local market. In this number you will tlnd men with as much as 45 years experience in the tobacco business,, to their credit. Records of 20 and 25 years of experience are real ofien. It is their duty and we can truthfully say that they ex ecute this duty. ilies to the house, and 45 ti per cent of the homes were owned by the oc cupants. A survey of Martin County will probably reflect favorably on the type of house and number of families to the house, but it would be very in tere&ting to learn what per cent of the homes were owned by the occu pants. The housing problem is usuully a symptom of growth as well as a means to growth. Once we have the industry in our towns and on our farms, quantity and quality of hou« ing accomodation will determine to a large degree the shortage and supply of workers. Inadequate hous ing is pnxktetive of excessive labor turnover, likewise adequate housing has a direct relation to production. That is why the I'. S. And today the Martin County Building and Loan As sociation is organized to help solve the same problems in bur county. Best economists agree that about 20 per cent of the total living expense' can be safely set aside for housing the family. In some cases the. amount could be more, in some loss. That is if you have on an average a net an nual income of $ 12(H), it Is consider ed safe to pay rent in the amount of $240. per year, or set aside $240. yearly for building the house you are to occupy. It would be interesting to know what per cent of the houses in Will-iamston have bath and water accomodations in them. These are now considered as necessities, though once regarded as luxuries. A proper amount of light in 'the rooms of a home is still considered in, the way of a luxury or whimsical taste.
