Believe Negro Caught Here Murdered Yelevrton (Continued from the first page) but that a man had been murdered near there, the place which turned out later to be the spot where the boy's body ~was found. A description was offered, and it varied so from the way tne boy looked when he left here that it was "hard to believe that it could be that of Gordon. An old toboggan cn the head, his clothes torn, and his face gashed about the temple, made the body appear to be that of any other than that of a bright young boy like Gordon. Hardly had an hour pass ed before Mr. Rose was again called, and told that his nephew had been murdered and that his body had been identified by Mr. John Lewis, an uncle of the dead boy and who lived not more than a mile from the scene of the almost unbelievable happening. The murder took place in Greene county and the coroner and sheriff there held an inquest over the body about 10:30 Saturday night. Nothing could be learned other than that sev eral people had seen the murderer, but none of them knew him. The body was Removed to Fremont about two o'clock Sunday morning where interment was made that afternoon «t 3 o'clock with large crowds at tending from many sections of the State. By the time and after the body was discovered, officers in Pitt, Greene, and Martin counties were investigat ing the case. The first clue came when they learned that the negro had pur chased a new suit of clothes and that he had thrown his old clothes behind an out-house in Farmville. Nothing of any material aid was learned that night although the officers continued in their work. Jail Wrong Negro Alexander Guvnor, was a surprised 17-year-old colored boy when he was placed under arresi here yesterday morning by Sheriff Roberson, and told he was wanted for the murder of the boy. The arrest came about when it was learned that Gaynor had visited in Farmville over the week end. His case was a bit baffling when the sheriff of Greene county could not get ready information from Gay nor's friends. However, Gaynor was not long in' clearing "himself onte he got the chance to explain his visit. Suspicion Leads To Bazemore Suspicion lead 1 o George Frank Bazemore when it was learned early Monday morning that he had been going to Wil.ton and other places with Yelverton.' It was also learned that Bazemore' was at the Farmers warehouse ut 2 o'clock Friday morn ing and that he left that house and went to the Roanoke-Dixie warehouse. He claimed to have left there about £ o'clock, but Mr, H. L. Meador, one of the proprietors jf the house, r.rxi Mr. Johnttm Gardner, night watch man, remembered that he was gone at 4 O'clock, the time the boy left with tlit' truck, liazemoie evident- IOR RENT: STORE IN THE TAR Heel building, sue 30x125, hot and cold water and steam heat. When Bazemore was arrested by Sheriff Roberson and Ms posse, he denied all knowledge of ever going to any places on loads of tobacco. He tried, but in vain, to set up various alibis, and as for giving an account of himself from 4 to '3 o'clock Fri day morning he was at a total loss. Every time he attempted to name anybody who saw him at any time Friday after 4 a. m., h« failed. He fail ea to prove his presence here when George' Hyman, Bill Latham, Waverly Johnson and his wife stated that they had not seen him. Faces Accusaatons with Nerve The negro, with an almost unvary ing and rigid nerve .stood the accusa tions, faltering little at times when the most horrible scenes of the mur der were brought to him. During the questioning, he would show every now and then ihat he was correctly charged when they accused him of the murder. - jh The accused man faltered only af ter the arrival of Ralph Simpson and Fred Edwards came and identified him These two men had unloaded the' to bacco at Monk's warehouse and they were positive in their identification. They stated Bazemore was the marf who had carried the load of tobacco there and claimed it. After his identification he was turned over to Sheriff E. A. lias berry, Deputies H: K. Cobb and Frank Moseley, of Green County, who im mediately took him to the Wilson County jail for safekeeping until the Green County uuperior court convenes in Snow Hill on the 13lh of Decem ber, when he will face a charge of f'r.st-degree murder. Hoy Well Liked Here At the death of his mother, Mar garet Rose Yelveiton, Gordon came' here six years ago, making: his home with Mr. Z. Hardy Rose, his uncle, at the Atlantic Hotel. He was only 11 years old at that time, and during his stay of six years here he had made numerous friends among those of his age and'had gained the confidence and good will of every one he knew. He i= survived by his father, Mr. J. Banks Yelverton, and two sisters, Ellen and Jessie, all .of Fremont, and J. B. Yelverton, a brother, of Dur ham, and a young brother, Jack, of Farmville. A large number attended the fu neral and burial in Fremont last Sun day afternoon.
