Crawford en tertained Friday evening with a rook and bridge party, complimentary to Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Warren, of Dur ham, who were their house guests. The home was attractively decorated ! with pine boughs and cut flowers, and the guests found their places with cards at the tables. Delicious salted I pecans and stuffed dates were enjoyed by the guests while they played. Mrs. Warren was given silk lingerie, and Mrs. Frank Freeman, of New York, was given a score pad. Mrs. H. M. Stubbs made high bridge score for the women and was presented an attract ive score pad, also. Dr. Rhodes won the gentleman's prize, a pair of hose. BETTIE WARD On Saturday morning about four | o'clock, the death angel visited our | home and took the soul of Mama, as j we all called her. She was generally I known by her neighbors and friends 1 a& aunt Bettie, the wife of the late I Simon D. Ward. She was a member jof the Congleton family, a very prominent family of Pitt county, and possibly was better known than any other woman in her community as her ! old home was located on the highway I between Williamston and Washing | ten. Her home was a • resting place ; for many a weary traveler, passing j that way. Mama had- been almost an | invalid for three years, caused by a trouble in her feet, but she was as I well as usual. On Friday evening wo j attended the burial of her brother, j Asa Congleton, who preceded her to, the grave about forty-eight hours. J When we returned home we found her i seriously sick. Our daughters whe | were with her had already railed in Dr. Warren and neighbors, and every I things was, done for her that a doctor, [family and friends could d, but in hei advanced age, sha being seventy eight year sold, nothing could stay the strong hand of death. Oh, Mama how we miss you. Your voire is now ! still. A place is vacant in our home that never can be filled. On Sunday afternoon in die pres | ence of a large crowd of sorrowing j relatives and friends, Elders Rodger | son, Harrington and Cowing spoke words to her sacred memory, then she was laid to rest beside the body of her husband in the family burying ground at the old homestead.
