Address all communications to The Enterprise The Legislature's Biggest Job The legislature comes to it* biggest task this week when it take* up the State-wide education bill. While we have had great improvements iti our school system within the past 16 j oars, it has been appar* lit tiiat there has been a weaknes. somewhere, i Many people thought it was because the entire 'policy of management was centralized u.t Raleigh while the p#y- j ing for the system was localized with ' the individual counties, the rich and thi poor alike. .'This plan has worked i wonderfully w ell in the rich counties, i but has been a great hardship in the j poorer counties. Which 'have had to ' pay a tax rate four times higher, in, some cases, than the richer counties kme had to pay. V' ' "* - 1 An Example That Should Be Followed Fareet-fire starters fared pretty bad in the Craven County Mjfuperior (ouit last"week; when 1U people, who were either careless with fire or who deliberately burned their neighbor's woods, were prosecuted. Fines were not heavy in most eases, on account v . I of the fact that many of the fires were" eaui.ed from thoughtless ignor Enforcing Sunday Observance Laws Governor Richards, of South Caro lina, did a Kootl thiiiK Sunday when lie had a strict enforcement of the law forbidding any business transac STATEMENT OF THE CONDITION OF THE Planters & Merchants Bank EVERETTS, N. ' t '«„* \ j ' \ Planters & Merchants t " Bank EVERETTS, NORTH CAROLINA. .*, ' - The proposition now before the i legislature seems to recognize the •V ■ „ * *" school children of the whole State of North Carolina, and that the entire State is responsible for every child in the State. The building and equip ment for school purposes in any dis trict is to be paid for by the local people according to their taste. But the big item, that of running all the for all the people for the con stitutional period of six tliat should be made eight months—; is to be borne by the entire State as | one unit. \ . " * i \ . " j The TPgislature '.should stay in Ra- 1 luigh until sotne suck law. is passed. ant 1 ? rather than from a spirit of I». * y . mischief. ! The habit of the burning of woods ! has caused great damage to the, lands and timbers of the State; and if the ' ■ ■ —■— ■ i laws now governing the burning of j woods are enforced, it will cause a : greater increase i« the timber produc- j tion of the State. tions for profit. The South Carolina U w prohibits all business on Sunday except by restaurants a*wd druj? stores. The modern affe refuses to bow to any law that restrains a man in any of his desire*. For that reason, we have no laws on our books that are enforced strictly, and we do not have a single lew that everybody respects. Perhaps glutting our personal de sires is one of the worst habits wej have. Everybody seems to be break-! ing some law, and we are prone to • think the laws we want to break are j bad laws. We do not see a pass without seeing the murder, the robber, the liar, the thief, the boot leifffer, the Shylock, the pistol "toter,"; the drunken driver, the care-' less driver, and many others doing tilings prohibited by law. Some people say no law should be passed until the people want it. Yet such an idea is contrary to reason; laws are made for people who do, ■wrong, things which are wrong by their very nature, things when prac-i ticed will either injure the practition er or those practiced upon, whether prohibited by law or not. The South Carolina governor thinks when the people of his State restrain themselves to the point of obedience to the Sunday law tihey will have a higher regard for themselves and have a greater respect for other laws. North Carolinians are demanding too many . privileges for their own good. 1 They will sooner or later a buse ihe privileges. FOR SALE: 200 BAGS VIRGINIA bunch seed peanuts. J. W.
