Recalls' Days Before Advent of Free Schools Mr. Luke L. Roberson, of Parmele, paid us quite a pleasant visit Wednes day. It iq, always pleasant to have old friends drop in and discuss the days gone by. Mr. Roberson related his early school experience. He stated that while he is now not quite 70 yean old, that his first two yean schooling was to what was then called an "en tered school," which was a school in which you paid the teacher a certain sum each month to teach you. He said that at that time there were nc free public schools in North Caro lina. He had to walk about two and a half miles, and he says the school house was only a small four-square leg structure, covered with boards and with a large old-fashioned dirt ' clifanney covering a large part of one! end. in which a huge log Are was buMt in cold weather, and the pupils' sat on benches fonming a hollow square in front of the fire, with the chimney serving as the fouith dimen sion in the completion of a perfect square. This school was located in Williams j Township, 5 miles southwest of Jamos-1 vilie. His first teacher, Mrs. Nancy J. Manning, is now living within one mile of the site of the old schoolhouse. j He remembers the school as a place of good discipline, good manners, and good work, where much good was ac complished in teaching the funda-: mentals of education, and where the youth of that day caught a glimpse of the opportunities offered by edu cation. And while the school did not meet the needs of its day, it was the beat thing in sight and the only thing available, and it did its part in es tablishing higher ideals and making better citizens by the system of obed er.ee and respect required of each pu- Pi».
