MOTHER'S DAY
PROCLAMATION
BY GOVERNOR
The following proclamation was re
cently issued from the Governor's of
ticj at Raleigh:
"Nor.ii Carolina ha* put the seal
ol lesisiati ve approval on Mother's
Day, which occurs each year on the
second Sunday in May and calls for
a proclamation by the Governor re
questing its proper observance. For
me, no duty has been more pleasant
than the performance of this obliga
tion. In annually proclaiming this
t!cy, 1 have not only complied with
the statute, but have experienced a
.sense of solemn satisfaction in being
able thus to add my feeble tribute
to the greatest of all human beings
—Mother.
"Mother's Day this year falls on
May Bth, next Sunday, and I hereby
issue my proclamation, setting it a
side as a day on which every North
Carolinian is urged to pause and pay
reverent homage to the woman who
bore him, whether she Still lives or
has passed to the Great Beyond to
join the innumerable throng of moth
ers triumphant. If she still lives,
wear a red rose in,, her honor ana
show, her some special attention; visit
her, write her a letter; lay your heart
as a tribute at her feet. If she has
passed, wear a white rose in her
memory and resolve to let this em
blem of purity inspire you to nobler
living in the future.
"There are many lessons in the ob
servance of Mother's Day that it,
would be well for each of us to learn.
The greatest of these being the les
son of love. Every mother has risk
ed Fier* own life that life might con
tinue on the earth, and
ti-ken the fear of death out of the
hearts of their.loved ones by their
triumphant entry into "that home not
n.ade with hands, eternal in the heav
ens." They have blazed the trail to
nobler living on earth; they have
pointed the way tc God above. There
fore, let us all rentier to motherhood
the homage that i sdue it, each mak
ing an individual application of the
meaning of Mother's Day.

unto set my hand and caused to be
affixed the seal of the State of North
Carolina.

In the early spring Superintendent
11. 1. Leake proposed a "Keep Room
CI, an" contest. The successful grade
in.both elementary and high school
was promised a halif holiday. The
fudges, MesdamCs V. A. Ward, G. H.
Cox, and W. K. Jenkins, came to the
nLool whenever they saw fit ana
diarted the scores that'they felt the
rooms scored for each time. '1 hey
made it a point to vary the day and
hour upon which they would visit, so
art to see the rooms as they were or
dinarily kept. Much real enthusiasm
was manifested throughout the
school. In fact, the school rooms be
came at once very decidedly home-
Ike and invitinje. After an extended
period of constant rivalry the judges
.bunded in the total scores. These,
when tallied, proved the first and
/leventh grade winners. So Friday
afternoon, April 29, was given them
n; a holiday.
Seniors Enjoy Luncheon
Nine of the senior class enjoyed
the elaborate luncheon served in their
lienor by the eighth grade home eco
nomics girls on Saturday evening,
April 30. The girls, as babies, wel
comed the seniors, to whom they had
given senior hats. From then on fun
and food made a delightful sand
wich.

tenth year home economics girls en
tertained a few frienas and honored
guests at a luncheon. Pink honey
suckle and dogwood gave the room
an invitings The food pre
pared by the girls was rather at
tractive and was enjoyed by those
present. Games and laughter added
to the pleasure of the guests.

poll for taxation, must list their taxes dur
ing* the month of May.
After May 31st the tax list for this coun
ty will be closed. Attent ion is also called to

You are required by law to meet the list
takers of the townslijps below and list„all
real and personal property. All faimers
must come prepared to list the number of
acres of each kind of crops, including fruit
trees and truck, as required by an act of
the last General Assembly. This is for sta
tistical purposes and not for taxation.
Please do not fail to see the list takers
before May 31st. Positively no extension
of time will be given.
You are urged to see the tax lister in your
township as early as possible, as it will save
time and prevent a last-minute rush.
