Season's First Cotton Report Shows Decrease (Continued from first page) According to the North Carolina indications, the stand is estimated at 87 percent as compared with 70 per cent reported for the same time, last The average date of first blos sonis is estimated to be July 6th as compared with the 11th last year. Of , course, the earliest blooms begin in the southeastern counties, centering aroung Bladen, where a date of June 30th was given for their first blooms. The poorest stand appears to be in this same southeastern xuea where 88 per cent is reported. __________ 801 l weevil infestation appears to be much more general and intensive than for several years. This is indicat ed toy the reported average of 20 per ;ent of complete infestation over the State's entire cotton aaca. In as much as Entomologists advocate dusting when IB per cent infestation occurs, this indicates a serious situation. Many areas report squares dropping j off profusely, with others claiming j that the drop is due to boll weevil | ladanages. County agents report that Considerable interest is manifested,: looking to dusting this y«ar. Scotland to Onslow, j Harnett to Brunswick, the farmers report a 34 per cent infestation. 1 he damage also seems to .be rather heavy all along the Southern border to Hoke county. The onost frequent comments from : over 267 cotton farmers are: "Cool | nights holding back cotton growth ; ::Too much rain" has also been harm ful by encouraging boll weevils and , grassiness; reports are profuse in-j dicating "backwardness and small plants". Most farmers indicate that j there are either no boll weevils this year or thait it is too early for then, to be noticedV.Lice damage, due to, wet weather, is serious from L'nion to , Beaufort counties. The crap is in I fairly good condition so far as culti- j vation and healthfullness is concern- j ed. Prospects appear to be good. The early dry conditions permitted the roots to get a good hold, deep into the »>oil. Fertilization has been heavy, but top dressing will be reduced. INSTALL 200 ELECTRIC COOLERS FOK WORKMEN Electric water collers are being in stalled in the Homsestead works of the Carnegie Steel Co. to prov ide drinking water for the concern's 12,- OCO employees. The company recent ly announced placing of a contract with Frigidaire Corpoiation, subsi diary of General Motors, for 200 elec tric coolers to be installed at once. Efficiency tests mafie Uy engineers of the steel company disclosed that electric coolers afford constant tem peratures, adjustable ,to any degree, furnish safer and better drinking wa ter for men toiling in intense heat, and in addition, permit the company to effect a saving in- ice bills and strvcing costs of $40,000 a year. The expected annual saving, according to the announcement, will total more than one-third the installation cost. Workmen came from long distances during these tests to get a drink from the electric coolers, proving even bet ter than engineers' figures the su periority of this type of water cool ing, according to the announcement. The Homestead steei works expects to install electric refrigeration in its restaurants and other pluces and do away with ice entirely, it is said. Electric water coolers were added to the Frigidaire line a few months ago. Five types of coolers, suitable for use in public buildings, offkes, in dustrial plants, hotels, theaters, and the like are being built from a stan dard Frigidaire design, in which only mass production parts are used, to gether with a few simple accessories. "The Frigidaire water cooler may be attached to the city water system or used with the ordinary water bot tle," says Oscar Anderson, local Frigidaire representative. "It is ex ceedingly compact and designed to look well wherever placed. "Inconvenience of outside ice sup ply, which has been to a considerable degree responsible for the unparal leled growth of Frigidaire, is as 1 marked in water-cooling equipment as it is any place else. The new cooler leaves, nothing to chance or outside irfluence and assures plenty of cold drinking water at all times."
