WEEVILS INFEST COTTONINSTATE Southeastern Part of State Especially Hard Hit, Says State's Statistician Serious, infestation by the boll weev il in southeastern North Carolina, and along the South Carolina border was reported yesterday by Frank Patter, State-Federal agricultural statistician, who lias completed a partial surv'ey of the State. The southeastern sections shows greatest damage, according to Park er's report, and if rainy weather con tinues the, worst damage ever exper ienced in the State from the ravages of the insect may be expected. \\ ayne. County showed first infestation of the section, according, to Parker, with many field' running over SO per cent damages. Dusting, now being prac ticed, is having little effect as a de terrent. "Weather conditions have been very favorable," Parker says, "lor a maxi mum propagation and damage. Too many farmers are not takiif the weev il seriously enough and are therefore not dusting and cultivating as much as it is advisable. A large percentage of the young bolls already opened are being seriously attacked in the main or central North Carolina—wUun belt. "801 l weevil damage had a big share in lowering the August 1 gov ernment cotton forecast, and the Sep tember 1 report may show a very much poorer condition, due to weev ils, according tu the present outlook." THE RISK was divided—in spite of storms and pirates, the merchants prospered. After a time the idea of a division of the risks at sea was ap plied to the danger from fire, which might destroy shop or home. 'Phen the big thought: If ships and shops are protected by a division of the risks, why not man? Is not a man as valuable as a ship? The division of risks; first for ships, then for shops, and then for men's lives marine insurance, fire insurance, life insurance. Just as the merchants of Genoa did not fear the ocean storms, the successful man of todavr thinking of his life insurance, says: "The years of my life lie ahead. Unknown dangers, storms, misfortunes, they, too. lie ahead. But they are |>owerless to de stroy my financial plans for the happiness of my family." The successful man does not carry his risks alone.
