PAGE FOUR CATTLE PAYS YEARLY PROFIT Only Crop on Edgecombe Farm That Has Paid Profit Every Year A farm herd of beef cattle is the only crop of Cotton Valley Farm, in Edgecombe .County." that has paid a profit each year. "Thirty head of pure bred Aberdeen- Angus beef cattle have paiiF-a -small , profit each year to the owners of Cot ton Valley Farm, despite fact that there has been a light demand for breeding stock; and most-- of the sur plus, was sold at beef prices." jiavs R. S. Curtis, animal husbandman at „ State College. "The manager of tliis . farm. Mr. L. W, Shook, states that his, cash crops, .such as cotton, to bacco, and peanuts, haVe made more total, money than the cattle, yet the cattle have paid in some profit con sistently each year." It costs little to maintain the' beef herd 'on Cotton Valley Farm. There are 25t) acres in pasture, where* lin eal tie range during summer. In. win ter they gleifii the fields, where the crops were grown and are.fed some silage and cotton?!--il meal, with graz ing on cover crops available Mr. Shook states that there are levv men in eastern, Carolina who should go in to the beef-cattle business on a large scale, ye) there are hundreds ol farms where cattle would pay well il handled as they are on hi*; place - .VI r. Shook has 850 acres under bis supervision, with 4.15 in cultivation, 250. in pasture and the remainder in woodland. Thirty cows are kept - in the breeding herd. There were 4(1 cows in the herd when Mr. Shook began t> manage the place some 12 years ago. There were of all sizes and conditions, with about ■half being grade Augus._ A good bull Was bought and the herd grade* I up. Ihe undesirable cows were sold as beef, and in about five or six years, Mr. Shook had ;f high-grade herd of 35 cows. He then sold these and bought a herd of 2*' pnre-.bre'd cows. a cost of about SKI above the price for grade animals. AH- excellent bull was secured to head the herd, and now on Impure breds are grow n.
