RAISING LIVING STANDARDS ON •FARM IS URGED Water, Light, and Heat Are Great Savers of Time And Energy Raleigh. Dec. 2 —"lie greatest sav ers of time and energy' for the farm housewife of North Carolina would be the establishment of running water, electric light current, and heating sys tems in the farm homes of the State. "If we could place just these three things in every home in North Car olina. we would see the standard of living rise so fast, it would be diffi cult to catch its skirts as it passed by," says Mrs. Jane S. McKimmon, assistant director of extension at State College "These are the greatest time savers that could be bestowed'on the housewife. Work is reduced tremen dously when there ir water in the house. No useless trotting to pumps or hydrants and back again doiens of times daily, and no extra steps in dis posing of waste water." Thirty-three per cent of 40,000 coun try women recently reported htat they had water piped to their kitchens, and 47 per cent stated that they had it on the back porch. This is the average for the whole country, states Mrs. Mc- Kimmon, but North Carolina does not do so of 51H farm homes in this State, where an inventory was made, only one-third had a supply of ■water available at the house, and less than one-fifth of the 518 had water piped into the kitchen and a sink in stalled.' The record of farm lighting plants is better', she states. Nearly all of the 518 home had such plants, and the State is up to the average in this re spect, but each rural home should have tliis power. When it comes lo heating plants, most country homes are heated by wood-burning fireplaces or stoves. Few homes have furnatcs. Less than 2 per cent of the homes in the small vil lages are so equipped. Ihe furnace saves much labor and gives a more uniform heat over the whole house. It "also helps to keep down sickness. ADD TO PLANT OF CHEVROLET Take Over $4,500,000 Iron Foundry to Make Castings W. S. Knudsen, president of the Chevrolet Motor Co., today announces that Chevrolet has taken over the mam moth gray iron foundry of the Sagi naw Products Co., at Saginaw, Mich. The newest plant acquisition of the Chevrolet Motor Company adds a $4,- 500,000 institution to the company's rapidly developing manufacturing op erations and provides Chevrolet with foundry facilities second to none in the industry. Mr. Knudsen recently completed an inspection tour of Chevrolet plants in Detroit, Flint, Toledo, Saginaw, Buf falo, Tarrytown, and Bloomfield, and points out that the acquisition ,ol Saginaw plant brings Chevrolet manu facturing facilities to the highest point of completeness and efficiency yet at tained. ' After the first of December the inaw foundry will be devoted excjju r sively to the pouring of Chevrolet, castings. A new conveyor system and other labor-saving devices, in stalled, give the plant a melting ca pacity of 800 tons of metal daily and make it one oi the most up-to-date foundries in the world. Outstanding among the features of the large plant is the ingenuity with which machines have been made to per form the vast biU.k of foundry work. .Specially designed mechanical convey ors shoulder practically all heavy bur dens. Core manufacture, assembly, and* baking, the charging and discharg ing of the immense cupolas, the pour ing of molten metal, and the cooling, cleaning, and finishing of castings all rely upon machinery more than ever. Human effort has been reduced to a minimum, resulting in increased capac ity and a higher factor of safety. Buildings are of brick and steel con struction and allow for 300,000 square feet of flout space. The plant em ploys 3OQO people when operating on a capacity basis.
