Friday, March 9,1928 How Many People Can a Doctor Serve? How many people can a doctor Serve adequately? No doubt we could find a wide difference of opinion on this question. In Buncombe County there is a doctor to every 679 people while in Gates County one doctor takes care of the health of 5,300 people, almost eight times as many as a Buncombe County doctor. There are 10 counties in the States with less than a thousand people to be served by each doctor. In Martin County the task of each doctor is to at tend the welfare of 2.121 people. Just how many people die in the State each year for the want t>f medical and surgical attention can not be estimated Vet it is practically certain that enough people die each year in the State who might be saved It Is Ordered by the Board of Commis sioners of Martin County, North Carolina, in Regular Session March 5, 1928, As Follows: Section 1 That negotiable bonds of Martin Qjuntv, N. C . be. issued in the maximum principal amount of $50,- 000.00, to be known as 'School Bonds of Martin County,' for purposes of erection and purchase ot school build ings in Martin County. V C., and as authorized under sub-section (a) of Section*62, county finam e act of North Carolina. and which school, buddings are 'necessary m complying with the constitutional six -months! school requirements. . 1- Saction 2. That a lax sufficient to ( pay the principal and interest of the I bonds when due shall be ' annually! levied and, collected. Section J. That a-statement of the county school debt has been filed with j the clerk, pursuant "to the county fi-1 nance act. and is open to public in spection. That this order shall take rffect J thirty da> s after the first publication! thereof after final passage, unless in | the meantime a petition for its sub-, mission to the voters is filed under this | article. — _____ ' The foregoing orderj has been intro duced and a sworn statement lias been I filed under the county finance act, showing the assessed valuation of the ! county to be $15,945,883; trie uet debt I for school purposes, including this is sue, to be. $388,832.33 A tax will be levied for the pay ment of the proposed bonds and interest if the same shall be issued. The death rate from child birth is three times as high in the counties with only a few doctors as it is in the counties well supplied. This alone indicates that the State needs more doctors. Yet only a few young men are studying medicine, which today has more to offer than law, engineerings, or teaching. It may IK- a little too hard a task for the average young man to undertake. * 4- • . LJ __ n nl ' V* An Enormous Fire Loss C - For the five-year period 1923 to 1927, inclusive, North Carolina lost the enormous sum of $25,919,893, an average annual loss of $5,183,978. We can cut that sum down one-third by using metal roofing, good safe furnaces and flues; and then we can cut another third by being careful with matches, cigarette stumps, electric irons, kindling wood, waste paper, loose trash, etc. * The loss of property is not so bad as the loss of a life almost every day in the year. Sometimes houses burn down on sleeping people; often children are left alone afid the house burns down on them; another cause is the handling of gasoline carelessly, a thing that requires the greatest care. As much as we sdyVabout the need of care with fire, we do not say enough. The schools could well afford to take.up some time in teaching caution against careless handling of fire. A Call We Can Not Afford To Ignore The Near East Educational Drive seems to be fall ing flat in Martin County. So far only one school in the county has made a contribution to the fund. It was one of the small schools of the county. It sounds a little strange to hear people say that we get too big to do little things, though it appears to l>e true in many instances. Martin County can not afford not to give some consideration to the stranger and beggar who stands at the door and knocks. If-200 rich people in the county would give $5 each to the Near East educational fund, it would doubtless do the world more good than a million spent on Marines.
