Tuesday, April 17, 1928 The National Oratorical Contest The national oratorical contest between high-school pupils has caused much think ing. Jhe subject is, -The Development of. or Present Significance of, the Constitution of the United States* which is the great est document on fundamental democracy ever written, except the teaching of Jesus. The study of the constitution by thousands of high schools will be profitable, especially so in the fact that the principles upon which our government is founded are embraced in the constitution, which are too often misunderstood. It is a safe guess to say that more than half the American people havjp never read the constitution., If, all people would submit to the constitution, we would have a safer country to live in. Judge Kerr's Mistake Judge Kerr made the political mistake of his life when he said that not 2 per cent of the opponents of A 1 Smith have the courage and intellectual honesty to say why they are against hint. Judge Kerr will find this rash statement will act as a bloody ghost along his political pathway for years to come. In fact, a majority of the people in his own, the second, congressional district say his state ment is false. The judge-congressman himself >vill realiie he has lied if he will balance off a part of his enthusiasm for true facts. All that Mr. Carr will have to do to find that his words are false is to listen for a moment to the voice of his own constituents. But what do the folks thliik of the honorable Mr. Kerr? Do they think he has any peculiar • inside knowledge of the greatness of Al Smith that the rank and file of tolks do hot know about; do they fed that because he is browsing around the green pastures and flower fringed gardens in Washington that he has» risen to the heights of the political to big ger worlds than that in which they are left? Due to the illness of v the proprietor of the Empire Cafe, who has been in the hospital for several days, the cafe was closed. With' the return of Mr. Dlykan the Cafe is running again and pre pared to serve its pa trons. Empire Cafe That it one of the dangers in politics. When the folks put a politician on a floored pea and feed hha good he is not satisfied, bat wants mote. First he wants to tell then how to do and then he dares to call them fools. It would he fuaqy to see the deco* folks in his district elect another congressman, gne that would not call them fools. So far as the mat ter of politics, no to explain why he ia for or against any candidates for any office. Certainly, they feel no obligation to the honorable ex-judge, now congressman, future-aspiring-higher-office Kerr for how they vote. Dangerous Drivers Pennsylvania authorities say that 95 per cent of the automobile drivers in that State are fit to drive, while the other 5 per cent are dangerous and unfit and should be driven from the roads. In North Carolina there is doubtless more than 5 l>er cent unfit drivers, if you count the drunkards and unbalanced ones who can't see a thing until long after it happens. And then we have the dare-devil drivers who will pass or burst, who seem to count killing the other fellow of little consequence, just so he can pasa. > North Carolina has the distinction of being a great killing State, and for that reason we should have more stringent enforcement of our present laws; especially is this true of drunken drivers drivers. Lying the Most Dangerous Crime There is hope for justice when a lawyer refuses to defend a client whom he knows to be guilty, and who he knows has not a single point of truth to base his case on. " \ There are many crimes that are not so great. Even the manufacture and sale of liquor is not such a des qi>erate crime when committed by what we usually call the lower class of white men or negroes. They grade the crime according to their enlightenment and ability to comprehend the nobler and higher degrees of citi zenship All such cases fall into the class of insig nificant crimes when compared to the crime of deliber ate, perjury, which some fellows resort to, even in I minor cases. One of the dangers of the day is when I a guilty man attempts to clear himself by lying. No man would deny the most guilty man the wisest coun sel to defend his rights, which all men have, but when i a man tries to escape punishment for a crime by com mitting a greater crime, it is a fine thing to see his lawyer drop him. Neither the individual nor the collective public are safe when a man can convict the innocent or clear the guilty by a lying tongue. The Congressman's Weaker Streak Congress has changed schedules. It has been talk ing all the year about tax reduction, farm legisla tion, and flood relief. That run has been made, and 1 we now find them talking about who to make Presi dent, and incidentally—in fact, deliberately—getting their own ducks in a row to swim back and draw the regular $20,000 next term. It is just as easy to find the weaker streak of human nature in and a mong congressmf*flHas anybody. Almost everybly is willing to see every man work for himself, because it is so natural. On the other hand, the |>aying voters corter resent high-salaried of ficials sitting around or running around telling them how to vote. gainst the said are hereby ntt- ( tified to present the same to the under signed on or before the 26th day in March, 192 V, or this notice will be pleaded in bar of their recovery.
