Friday, March 22, 1929 The Root of All Evil' The Almighty Dollar can be churned with the down fall of Togo Pulley, according to his own statement. The self-confessed moonshiner, bootlegger, automobile thief, and murderer wheti asked for the cause of his downfall, answered "the Almighty Dollar. - ' He was born on a poor Tender County farm about 25 years ago, saw litt4e of the world, and.knew but little of its sweets or bitters He went to school only a few months The family drifted from the farm and he entered a cotton mill in Greenville, where he went to school two hours a day for a while in connection with his factory work He read novels and maga zines; he did not say what kind He soon found there were many gay things hi the world, and he launched out for them He had little training in the finer principles of life and went out where these things were entirely forgotten. He soon reached the point where he would rather enter a store in the night and get a hundred dollars quickly than to enter a factory in the day and hon estly toil for a living. : • The taking of an automobile from a man's gate soon became a joy to him. All (hose things that rise up in the breast of an honest man, or even a half honest man, were gone; and only the appeal for the things he wanted were up|)ermost in his mind and conscience. • ' ' ■ ' * . The evil spirit grew and thrived until shooting a man down in the darkness and stillness of the night was no shock to him; even though the man was »0' an enemy but a friend. It was rather an extreme case, one in which the FOR ECONOMIC ANBPO * TATION Quarter Million NEW SIX CYLINDER CHEVROLETS on the road since JAN. A SIX IN THE PRICE RANGE OF THE FOUR spirit of a cold devil had banished every vestige of virtue, even gratitude, which is shown in the very depths of savagery. "***-, And he says it is all because of the "Almighty Dollar." "For the love of money is the root of all evil." This text is not preached enough in these modern days. Other s are fallowing the very same paths that Pulley did. A dangerous master —money. Another Police Officer Shot This time the Chief of Police of Southern Pines was shot by a stranger who was parked near a school house. While the officer is unable to talk, it is thought that he was either examining the man's car or at tempting to .search it when he was shot. The occu pant of the car, the man who did the shooting, left the car and made his escape. The car contained no liquor, but the serial number had been cut off. One of the greatest menaces today is the great num lier of lawbreakers traveling through the country on cars. Just as soon as a man steals a car or breaks any of the country's law, he seems to want to run over or shoot somebody, and they seem to single out those who are charged with enforcing the law. There seems to 1* a spirit abroad to destroy the laws by killing out, buying out, or scaring out the representatives of law enforcement. Too little atten tion has been given to the backing up of police and other enforcement officers. What we need is a real honest determination to enforce our laws, which would clar the road of most of the danger. For when all the rum-runners, night sports, and automobile thieves are taken off the roads, honest users of cars will be much safer. Children Should Be Examined The county health department, in conjunction with the State Board of Health, will have nurses and doc tors at Jamesville, Williamston, and Robersonville next week for the purpose of examining every child entitled to enter school next year for the first time. Th purpose of the examination is to find any physical defects that may exist among the children. This opportunity should be embraced by every par ent, and they should give full cooperation in seeing that every child is brought in for examination. No child should be permitted to enter into any task with a handicap such as many children have in some form; it may be in the eye, nose, ear, or throat, or perhaps Y the feeth Most of these difficulties can be cured easily if we only know they have them. Now is the time to find out about them. According to a statement from Doctor Warren, the county su|»erintendent of health, this service will be extended to every school in the county ii the people will ask for it. When we consider that our neglect may mean the dumbness and ignorance of our sons and daughters, we should get busy and see that all have a chance. Remember, a third of the young men examined for the late war were physically defective, much of the trouble coming from causes which the health depart ment is trying to correct.
