CARD OF*THANKS To our kind neighbors and, friends, we wish to express our gratitude foi the kind sympathy and numerous gifts which wc have received owing to the lots of our home by Arc. MR. AND MRS. LEWIS ROBERSON and FAMILY SAYS SOUTH IS NATURAL HOME FOR LIVESTOCK • Mild Winters and Long Growing Season Are Factors * ♦ Because of its mild crops, long growing season, ease of producing for age and feed crops, and lack of seed for expensive housing, North Caro lina and the South is the natural home for all classes of livestock. No other section of the world can compete with the South if farmers will take the mat ter seriously and go into the business. This was the tenor of all discussions at the 17th annual meeting of the Southern Livestock Association held-at _State College on January 7, 8, and 9. Homer Hancock, president of the As sociation and former commissioner of Agriculture for Tennessee, delivered the keynote address. He plead for the .production of more livestock to raise the profits from southern farms, to njake the soils more fertile and to ul - Innately raise the standards of living in rural sections. He gave as his own experience that a livestock program had been followed for more than 80 ycars-.on the farm tliat he now owns and as yet no mortgage had ever been placed upon the l^nd. Commissioner W. A. Graham and others, speaking before ttte associa tion, pointed out that Southern farm ers must continue- to-grow the cash ciops with which they arc acquainted, but that also livestock is needed to fur nish a market for surplus feed and to provide a better living. ) Many of the lectures were techni cal in nature, but most of them were of great interest to the average farmer. Talks by I)r. Clarence Poe, R. L. Shu ford, D. J. Lybrook, H. B. Arbuckle, J. H, McClain, and others were di rect to the point and given from the actual experience of farmers. The livestock meeting was attended by some 150 experts from all sections of the South. The farm agents and a ! number of visiting farmers swelled the 'attendance during the week and it was {declared one of the most, successful j meetings ijt the history of the body. What Fertilizers Can Not Do (Front American Fertilizer) j I Fertilisers can not take the place ol humus. There can he no substantial plant growth without bacteria iu the soil, and bacteria can not survive with out humus. Most of the plant food in commercial fertilizers becomes avail able to the growing plants only through the intermediate action of these bacteria. Many farmers overlook the | importance of maintaining an adequate amount of humus in their soil.
