Tuesday, January 6, 1931. - ___ ! n Starving for the Power ol Exchange Babsi n, the w'uk-ly-known economist, is right when , he says that ihe money of this c mntry is a'l locked up and doing no one any good. Hanks have filled their vaults liecause of the fear of a run on them by panicy depositors. It is certain, that large sums out side of banks have been buried from the world. There is no earthly need for such a condition which is largely the result of mental fright. If the public mind was nonhal. business would be fair. The people are wand ring around, trying to find something to blame their troubles on, and of course, they have found some things to charge them up to Such as taxes, schools and similar costs. But they have missed the main hole in the whole situation. Our own prodigal acts that have carried us so far that we spent all"we had and mortgaged our future are responsible for conditions as we find (bent at the present time. We owe" much money and the fellow holding the |ia|K-r or claim is in a strain and unable to carry us longer. The few who have money are hiding it, leaving no cash in circulation. What we need to do is put our money in the hands of the ex changers, and then tiling w>uld brighten up. We have the food, the clutHing and the merchandise, yet we are starving to death because wf have "little |M>W er of exchange - There are those who are taking care of their money in old trunks and rthe; hiding places, but that prac tice is inviting to the thief and roblier and one of the two might .get it yet. We have got to come out and keep business hel|>s us. Things To Do This Year Things to do this year: Plant less cotton. Reduce the acreage Of tobacco at least 25 j>er cent. I'lant more corn, |*>tatoes, pea nuts, legumes, hay and some clover. It. will cost less money and require less work. Hut the best part of all is'that the small crop of cotton and tobacco will sell for more money. ■-Oof-prosperity is planted in the field and there is where we will have to go to dig it out. A" few good things to have in every family .are chickens, milk, butter, meat, potatoes, corn, field and garden vegetables. All of these can l»e produced abundantly on any farm in this county, and-the com bined use of these things will keep peop'e healthy and happy. It will require less work to live that way than it will to raise something to sell to get money and buy them back and have all Ihe jirofits gouged out of you on Iwith the things you sell and the things you buy.. That they are required to appear ■if Must Save Road to Freedom Cripple the public schools and march civilization down to Babylon is the route mapped for the people by some. We are in full sympathy with the demand for a ; more rigid economy in every department of our ; government. All salaries from the governor's on down should be adjusted to conform with the string | ency of the times. But we are not in sympathy with j the howl from a generation of people who have spent I their .fortunes in the folly and fun of the day, mak ing demands that our governmental institution I* 1 shaken down and torn asunder. It has required i many centuries to establish our organized govern ment and society has woven into our system all the j' best thought and experience of the past until every | man has his equal show in all of our public govern j mental departments, which embraces the most intel | ligtnt citizen.as well as the most humble one. We all lienefit from the same school system. We all walk the same roads. We all use the same courthouse. Now m ist we desert all these and drift down toward j ihe dark ages? Only twelve years ago, land was sitting on the ihront of prosperity. Now it is trailing the dust of i poverty. Abolishing or materially weaking our schools will not raise it from the dust, but will drag ii further into the mire; for. the seat of our trouble, toda* resulted because the owners of stocks and bonds have more education than the owners of land. The owners of stocks and bonds in North Carolina have made by outrading the landowners of the State, many times more than all their taxes. What the average citizen needs is sufficient knowledge to hold up his end in a trade. Now is the time for the'common people to fight. v They are already being held down by wealth. They should demand an education at the hands of wealth. If taxes can !«• evenly distributed, and they certainly should be, it will not lie a burden on anybody. I he man who demands the crippling of our schools is only helping to drive oijr children down to Baby lon. I'he Prodigal Son had too much sense to cut off the road that lead back to the palace of his father. Now the people of North Carolina may be jxior and hungry, but they must not cut off their only | road to freedom—the free public school. "If Wintef Comes" I ' . "... ' i ** * v If winter comes spring cannot be far behind," reads a novel of more than usual interest which was publi hed some years ago. \nd Roger Babson came forth recently with the statement that the "frozen assets" about which we have heard so much, will eventually thaw out. I'ite famous statistician says: "Although these Eskimo banks are covered with snow, most of them—if given a chance—will emerge Vigorous and active when the spring time of improv ing business again melts the congealed assets. "It is up to every community to give support and i encouragement to its local banks in these times." \\ c h i.eve Mr. Babson is wrong however, when he says that the millions of depositors in closed banks in ihe I'nited States "become pessimists of the worse sort." Right here in Kdenton we have seen some mighty good sfxirtsmanship among depositors in the Citizens Bank. One of them, who is also a stockholder in the bank, said yesterday that he was "willing to do any thing to help the situation out." He is going on with his business hopefully and as it nothing hail hap|>ened. But going back to Babson. He suggests that cham- i hers of commerce, Rotary clubs and other organiza tions form vigilance committees to "spike every ma licious rumor about its banks and to make a business and social outcast of every tale-bearer!" fortunately for this section there is a small per centage of those who insist on stepping on the gloom ' gas.— Edenton Daily News. i i and answer or demur to the complaint | which has been tiled at the oifice of j the clerk ol superior court of Martin | county at Williatnston, N.
