VVe ran d'scharge our obligation to humanity in that way no longer. "There are those who are as honest as we; they are as willing to work as we are. They are hungry , and we can't sit idly by anv, longer. We must feed the hungry. The system new in operation has worked well and mans have l>eeii hel|>ed, but it is entirely inadequate —there isty enough to meet the needs. The churches, the lodges, the citizens are lieing looked squarely in the face by hungrj people. If they are to preserve their consciences.-they must act, and act now. Good News It is good news to the people to learn that the Planters and Merchants Bank, Kveretts, reopened Friday of last week. The re-opening means that stockholders and de positors will all get more than they would if the hank was liquidated by an outside agent. The State banking eiepartment, after investigating the condition of the bank, expressed itself very fav orably toward the re-opening of the bank. There is one feature that is more pleasing than any connected with the the financial side, and that is the gcxid men who have struggled with the drastic financial situation have an opportunity to come back again and stay iti the fight to win. The directors of the Planter* rtnrt Merchants Bank, as are most others, T»re men above reproach; vet, they are dependent up on agriculture for their income. When men struggle so hard to sustain and maintain an institution for the good of a community it is a real joy for men to rally to them when the> and their life's work are about to I*' swept away. Now is the time for the community to. cheer them _and stand by Nothing will help the com munity more than for the bank to come back. Even if there is financial depression, the people can easily support the bank which, in return, can do much to help the return of normal busimss. The Governor Speaks Governor 0. Max Gardner was the big headliner in the news last week when he delivered h>s biannual message to the General Assembly of North Carolina. Our various institu tions should be as good and cost less tax money. And, after all, that is what most people want and what all the people need. We can't afford to do less for our insane and unfortunates. We must handle the law -4 less. And the children must be schooled. No one would have our roads removed. In fact, none of us I would be willing to abolish our system of government | commenced and established -by our forefathers. What we want to do is exactly in line with Governor Gardner's recommendations—good government at the lowest possible cost. If North Carolina will adhere closely to the Gover nor's advice and farm to make a living all the people will make progress. More Profits for Packers i The new ruling by a United States judge in the DisfKct of Columbia Court, allowing meat |>ackers i to ente\ the retail trade will likely result in a striking blow to toje retail merchant. It will enabe the pack ers to establish their own retail stores in all towns of any size, and right then and there the independent merchant will be crushed. The courts ruled in 1920 that the packers should not l»e allowed to retail as it would give them the power to build too great a monopoly. The recent decision indicates that the great aggregations of wealth have the edge and are always in the saddle. Centralization of |x>wer generally causes an ex plosion. and among the few rulers of our products | they have exploded and killed all of our prosperity. Armour should not be permitted to establish a retail store in Williamston. If they do. it will be to create profits for Armour and not for our peop'e. Buying That Hurts . Up to the front door steps a jaunty salesman comes, wishing to s|>eak "to the lady of the house." What is it today? Magazines, stockings, kitchen I pans, needles and what have you? Pay your money and take your choice and chance. During recent years house-to-house solicitation has undergone a transformation. That character of canvassing which is not lieneficial to the community i is growing rapidly. There are, of course, many types of such solicitation. But the prospective purchaser may well bear in mind the seriousness of lending support to the most general type of such selling j campaigns. The solicitor usually comes to Washington from a-other state, representing directly some out side ccmpany. Often tempting prices are suggested as being the fruits of direct distribution, but such distribution helps no one save the distributor. It does not stand to reason that a bright young man from another state is coming to town at the ex panse of his company to make benevolent gifts of the wares that he distributes to people among whom he sojourns briefly. Manufacturing companies are not giving away anything. A variation of the same kind of solicita tion is conducted by mail. Cigars and other products »ire sent on trial wilhuut orders having been placed. Solicitors of this type pay no local taxes. Their companies pay none in Washington. They maintain no counter at the constant service of the people. I hey employ no one who lives in the community in to which they enter. They pay no salaries into the community. No commissions are paid which assist in the maintenance of those cigar stands, magazine stands, stores or establishments which are permanent institutions helping in the growth of the community and seiving its citizens. At times there is risk in givng orders to those who show no satisfactory credentials.
