C., as second-class matter under the act of, Congress of March 3, 1879. Address an communications to The Enterprise and not to the individual mcmU-rs of the firm. 'Tuesday, December 1, 1931 Smoot and the Tariff Mr. Smoot is apparently willing to justify the sins of his own high tariff by saying it is not high enough, and that we should go higher to get even with Eng land. Mr. Smoot seems to be more interested in the principle of trying to protect the interest of a few manufacturing friends than he is in perpetuating the peace and prosperity of our country. He loses sight of the fact that if we shut out England's manufac tured goods, she will shut out our raw materials. Eng land will produce her own tobacco in her colonies. She will produceh er button in her own colonies, and she will get her peanuts from India, the largest pea nut producing country in the world. Her wheat will be raised m Australia, Canada and the Argentine. And once she begins to furnish her own needs, the market for America's principal cro[>s will be destroy ed. We need to kick the politicians out of Congress, and put statesmen there. So long as-Congress is dominated by special interest representatives, we need not look for much relief. [PEANUTS! 5c per pound For a limited time, we are willing to exchange our paper with the people of this county for one of their principal crops— Peanuts—at what we believe to be a living price for them, 5 cents per pound. We believe that peanuts are too low and that they will be higher in price if the farmers will hold them off the mar ket fot a time. To back our belief, we make this offer to exchange our paper for your peanuts in payment of your subscription on a basis of 5 cents per pound for the peanuts. A3 years Subscription For 1 Bag of Peanuts STANDARD SIZE • *• t The regular subscription price of the Enterprise is $1.50 per year; a three-year subscription would be $4.50. An average r ' bag of peanuts at 5 cents per pound would bring you approxi mate this sum. So, for one bag of peanuts we will allow a three ■ +■ year subscription. No smaller quantity than one bag will be ac cepted. * * V Renew Your Subscription with Peanuts Get 5c Per Lb. For One i FOR LIMITED TIME ONLY Repeating the Words of the Criminal \ , Governor Ritchie of Maryland in criticising the laws of our country tried to make himself popular by saying we have too many laws. The governor was only repeating the words of the criminal in this say ing. Let the governor come fair with the people, and say what law should be repealed. Is it the law against killing, arson, rape, burglarly, stealing, maim ing, highway robbery, breach of promise,- false pre tense, reckless driving, perjury, embezzlement or just what law would he have repealed? The governor well knows there are many people against all these laws. Governor Ritchie's words are treasonous and se ditious. Let him name the bad law, and he will, of course, have to confine himself to those he or his friends want to break or have already broken. Can Never Win With Raskob The Hoover administration has evidently done the Democratic parly much good. But Raskob has, ap parently hurt' it more than Hoover has hel|>ed it. The people are demanding a democracy entirely different from the Raskob principles which are equal ly as monopolistic and high tariff in ideal as those advanced by Hoover or any other Republican in the country. The Democratic party can never win so lang as it suffers itself to be chained to such a body of death as Kaskob. Restoring Small Town Business Some of the secrets of restoring small town business, where it has shown signs of decadence, were pointed out by Dr. Julius Klein in a recent radio address to be found in a brisk resolute modernization program for the stores, the introduction of more rigid efficiency, remodeling or even transformation of equipment and arrangements, the installing of stock-control systems, the careful training of sales people, co-operative ad vertising, chamber of commerce activity, and the cre ation or arousal of keener civic consciousness. One of the most potent weapons available to the small town merchant, the s|>eaker pointed out, is the trade-developing power of local advertising media. "Certainly, intelligently guided publicity and con sistently vigorous local advertising, especially in these days of consumer timidity, represent outstand ing means at the command of the smaller-community merchant for arousing greater interest in his goods and attracting customers to his store. —Cadillac (Mich.)
