FUILISNID KVKRY TUMDAY AWC fRIDAY I JOSEPH W.WARD ' DIES AT HOME IN FLAT SWAMP Born in This County in 1846 —Served in Army of Confederacy . - - ■ - 4 —Joseph Vy,- Ward, -Martin County native and a' Civil War veteran, died at his home near Flat Swamp church, ' just acros the line in Fitt County last Monday morning in his 86th year. He' had been in declining health for several years, the end coming gradually. | Funeral services were held at the late home Tuesday afternoon by El ders John Roger son and B. S. Cowin, i assisted by the, Methodist minister of Bethel. Interment was in the family , burial ground. He is survived by seven children, Mrs. Heber Williams, of Greenville; Mrs. Ed Andrews, Misses Nellie, An nie, and Bertie Ward, and Mr. I.uke Ward, of Flat Swamp, and Mr. James Ward", "of Ayden. ' Mr. Ward was born in Williams Township, this county, in December, 1846. At the age of 17, or four years Injure he was old enough to vote, he joined Captain John Ashley Manning's company in the Seventieth Regiment l of Junior Reserves under Colonel i Armrstead. Local Firemen Entertain ■ with Fish Stew at River . ——— Members of the local fire company entertained their wives, sweethearts i and special friends at a fish stew at the river last night, more than a hun dred enjoying the food deliciously pre pared by Chief Cook Will Baker. , THE ENTERPRISE SCHOOL NEWS OF OAK CITY ♦ . «- Makes Plans for Canning for Oak City, April 28.—{Special to the Enterprise).—The special meeting of the Oak City Parent-Teacher Associ ation was held last Tuesday afternoon at 2 (.'clock in the home economics! room of the school building. The ob-' ,Ject of the meeting was to discu&s and make plans for canning vegetables and fruit for the use of the hot lunefi club next school term. ' ... The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. E. K. Harrell. 1 Principal H. M. Ainsley suggested that definite plans be made and a date set for the first canning day. The fol lowing committee was appointed to take charge of the different sections of the community: Mrs. H. M. Ains-i ley, Mrs. Donald Hyman, Mrs. Oscar Council, Mrs. W. B. Bennett, Miss ' Hattie Everett, Mrs. John Bellflower and Mrs. Joe Harris. Many interest ing and useful suggestions were made and June 10th was set for the first , meeting of the canning club. The as sociation showed a splendid attitude of cooperation and a large number of local parents was present. About fifty parents were present besides the teach ers. ('Had to note that two fathers at tended the meeting. Before the clos ing of the business session a rising vote of thanks was extended to Mrs. | Harrell, president and Miss Julia \ Holloway, secretary, for their splen- , did service during the past .year. The j refreshment committee served iced lemonade and wafers. The meeting was the best business session of the year. Parents visited the different classrooms and noted with many kind remarks the progress their children .had made during the school year. ! The senior class is presenting to the | school a splendid "Collection for the home economics department consisting !of a 64-piece china set and other parts 'making a very economical and service able gift. This will be presented on the night of the class exercises, i Miss Zetterower, English and French teacher ill the local schoo.l has ac cepted a position as assistant dietitian for the "All Western Tour" sponsor ed- by the University of North Caro lina, a 65-day trip starting from Char lotte, through most of the western states.
