Tuesday, June 28,1932 An Unfounded Fight The reason for a fight against Roosevelt for the Democratic presidential nomination seems unfounded so far as the people are concerned. Roosevelt is re garded as an honest and fair man, [assessing reason able ability and being about as true to the principles of Democracy as any candidate suggested for the po sition. A large majority of the American people evi dently favor bis nomination. The objection comes from a half dozen selfish men who want the nomination for themselves, and as a result they are throwing every stone they can find against the Roosevelt movement, hoping they will bet ter their chances for the nomination. Nothing will help Hoover more than a Democratic fight' arranged by selfish politicians. We are unfortunate in having some aspirants who have no ideas except those centering on high tariffs, others who think of nothing but liquor and still others who are interested in nothing but getting in office themselves. Most of them think little of honeH gov ernmental principles as propounded by Jefferson and Jackson. Any great party that ponders more for a irrespons ible vote than it does to administer the affairs of government so that suffering humanity may be re lieved of some of the unjust burdens now pressing down upon them, is not worthy of victory. Hard To Please Folks are hard to please; possibly more so now than ever before. God has tried numerous times to please man, but the devil generally comes in and spoils everything. Old Satan came in and destroyed the pleasures of the Garden of Eden. Israel refused to obey the ten com mandments, and now well-raised people refuse to obey the law (all the laws) of the land. « Satan has always been disobedient, and when he leaves us we will obey. Mc- Caskey and wife, Mary L. McCaskey, dated October 3, 190S, and recorded in book No. 000, page 189, Martin County Registry, and adjoins the lands of C. C. Fagan, W. H. Hampton, A. wife to H. D. Bateman, trustee, on the 20th day of June, 1928, and recorded ia the office of the Register of Deeds of Martin County in book X-2, page 633, and default having been made in the payment of the note thereby se ctored and the holder of said note hav ing demanded foreclosure of said deed of trast, the said H. D. Bateman, trus tee, will expose at public sale to the highest bidder, for cash, at the court house door of Martin County, North Carolina, on the 11th day of July, 1932, at 12 o'clock noon, the following de scribed land: B. Waters, J. W. Swinson and others; aa4 ia the same tract of land ia which C. F. and N. A. Getsinger conveyed their undivided interest to J. A. Get singer, by deed, which deed is duly recorded ia Martin County Registry, to wfcich reference is made for a more complete description. Said tract of land to situate oa N. C. Highway No. 90, between Jamesville and Plymouth, •t Dardea Station, and to known as Democratic Mistakes -vs-% Democratic mistakes are Mr. Hoover's only hopes for election this fall. The Republican Party, like the Democratic Party, is made up mostly of «ood peo ple. But their long time in office, their natural mis takes in this day of turmoil, stress, and strife, coupled with the baneful influence of greed, which has a stranglehold on the party leaders, has destroyed the confidence of a very large number of former members of that party. They are going to vote Democratic if that party offers principles of government that give promise of relief. A quarrel over candidates or platform planks may yet destroy the Democratic hopes of victory, which are unusually bright. Worthless Pleasures We are still sending too much for worthless and destructive pleasure. Business men who have traded in legitimate and useful commodities for half a century are failing un der the strain of hard times. Hollywood, where ideas are born that injure business and morals, is pros tiering. The patrons of Hollywood are helping to de stroy business. ' Contortionists Needed No, an acrobat will hardly do, and a contortionist will find it difficult to get by these days, according to Judge, in the following story: "A fellow has to be a contortionist to get by these days. First of all, he's got to keep his back to the wall, and his ear to the ground. He's expected to put his shoulder to the wheel, his nose to the grindstone, keep a level head, and both feet on the ground., And at the same time, look for the silver lining with his head in the clouds?' An Anniversary Arrives New York World-Tele gram Two years ago tod iy Herbert Hoover started the world off to a wild spree of nationalistic selfishness. He signed the Hawiey-Smoot tariff bill. That monstrosity, born of vote trading, was certain to cause retaliation by competing countries in the world market. It has done just that. It has aggravated the depression by reducing the volume of both exports and imports, in quality as well as in value, and consequently has reduced the number of workers in this country and others. It has stimulated bad feeling and brought embargoes and near-embargoes against American goods by many of this country's best customers. It has helped to bring movements for customs unions in South Ameri ca and Europe, designed to make those regions fur ther independent of this country's products. These things are well known. A move to correct the situation might well be ex [jected now. Instead, four new embargo tariffs, against foreign copper, oil, coal, and luber—all of which we export as well fcs import—will go into effect next Tuesday. Adopted by Congress by vote-trading even more flag rant than that on the Hawley-Smoot bill, President Hoover signed the new bill without a word of protest. Now the people will pay the higher rates, as they deliberate whether to vot for the high-tariff Republi cans who want to isolate the country entirely, or the low-tariff, Democrats so many of whom in recent months have forgotten their party principles. the home place of the parties of the first part aforesaid. The said land will be sold subject to a first of trust to James H. Corbitt, trustee, of record in the office of Register of Deeds of Martin Coun ty, and further subject to the taxes on said land for the year 1932. This the 4th day'of June 1932. H. 1).
