PAGE FOUR NEGRO KILLED INSTANTLY IN FIGHT SUNDAY Walter Page Fired \ Shot That Snuffed Out Life Of Charlie Keel Charlie Keel, a young colored man of this county, was killed instantly in the Bethel community, near Wynn's church just across the Pitt County line Sunday afternoon by Walter Page, al so colored, while Page was shooting at another negro named Allen Smith. The shooting was said to have oc curred while the negroes were gath ered at the church during the services. Keel was operating a soft drink stand across the road from where the fight ing began. During the scuffle, Keel made an attempt to part the two men but during the argument Page drew a pistol and shot at Smith, the bul let missing its mark, striking Keel in the head, causing death. Page made his escape, but later re turned to surrender to Pitt County of ficers, who lodged him in the Pitt .County jail at Greenville. W. H. Knight, Robersonville negro, says he was in the church during the shooting and that lie jumped out the church window and was followed by several others, which interfered with the services for a short while. W. Hines.
