The bold and Unprecedented at tempt by the Democratic leadership to force its party's outright prohibi tion repeal proposal througH the house failed and dimmed prospects of fur ther action *>n the issue in that branch during the remainder of the short session. The action was interpreted on t"a|>- itol hill as foreshadowing a special session of the new Congress next 1 • ! spring soon after President-elect Roosevelt is inaugurated so that the Democrats may carry out their pledge for flat repeal. Despite the defeat of the resolu tion by the narrow margin of 272 to 144—two-thirds majority beinjf requir ed for adoption—the Democrats plan ned immediate attack on the problem of modifying the Volstead law. Eighty-one "lame-duck" members, not returned to the next Congress, and 83 Democrats re-elected in No- I vcmber, voted against the- measure, sixty-nine defeated incumbents voted for it. A shift of six votes from the negative to the affirmative would have sent the resolution to the senate. It was the first test in Congress on flat repeal of the 18th amendment since it was voted into the constitution in 1917. Had the measure passed, it would Shave been necessary for three-fourths. [of ttic states to ratify the change be- j ! fore the change could have Leen ef-1 fected. FAVOR ORDERLY SALE PEANUTS (Continued from page one) As The general aim of the movement was understood at the meeting Mon day, the central committee will han dle the sales policy, provided the agree , ment proposed is supported by a suffic | ient number of growers. However re -1 grettable it might lie, there are a num ber of farmers who have no control over their peanuts. In other words, there are .papers against them and their crop, in those cases known as "distressed peanuts." These farmers will be permitted to sell first the per | centage necessary to life the mortgage or debt. Those who are in a position I to do will be asked to bold their pea nuts until better prices prevail. How ever, there will be no contracts to ; sign for the plan is advanced on a | strictly honorable basis. Yet every fman will be expected to.stand by his I word. The meeting went on record as fav- I oring some plan that would increase j the price of farmers' peanuts. A res olution was also passed by unanimous i vote, requesting all farmers to keep their peanuts at home until sold. De j livery to market before the peanuts are sold is understood to be one of the surest ways to depress the market. Early next week, the central com mittee members from all over tlie belt j are scheduled to meet with the clean ers, and Martin farmers will have to' hustle if they are to perfect their plans and get representation at that meet- 1 ing.
