COTTON FUTURE IS DISCOURAGING Outlook Points to Six-Cent Cotton for Crop This Coming Season Were it not that cotton is about the only crop that many farmers can grow for a supply of cash, its produc tion in North Carolina this year should not be attempted, believes *C. B. Williams, head of the department of agronomy at State College The crop will sell for only about six cents a pound, according to the present outlook, and farmers can best heat the depression not by growing more of this six-cent product but by producing enough food and feed to meet their own requirements and that of their tenants and workstock, Mr. Williams says. After this has been arranged for, then the landowner should consider cotton or other cash crojis. "This is the year of all years to place first emphasis upon the produc tion of food and feed crops," says Mr, Williams. "We have been flood ed with questions recently asking us whether it will pay to fertilize cotton under present conditions. Our ans wer is that if the cotton is correctly fertilized, properly cultivated and planted with good seed on the best adapted- land.. It .may return 4 small profit or pay a moderate wage for tre time and effort put into its produc tion. I think this statement will hold true if the season is at all nor mal." Mr. Williams said he was basing his conclusions upon research work with cotton in both the •.•oa.ital plain and piedmont sections' of- the State. Tests conducted through a period" of 20 years show thai when the price of seed cotton is as low as at present, it is almost impossible to make suf ficient acre -yields to pay the cost of producing, harvesting and ginning, unless the crop has heen fertilized. Therefore, he says, unless one can fertilize his cotton, he had best not grow it, because the fixed expenses will be too high for profit at present prices..
