Club Meeting
The Macedonia home demonstra
tion club held its regular meeting
last Wednesday in the home of Mrs.
Will Taylor.
There were only a few .vomen pres
ent, due, perhaps, to the busy sea
son of the year. Plans for field day
were completed. Mrs. Eason Lilley
kindly contributed a playlet she had
written bringing in different subjects
that have been studied which will be
carried out by several women of the
club on field day.
As this is the season of fruit and
vegetables, canning was the project
for the afternoon. Thirty pints of
vegetables were canned.
During the meeting, the women
discussed different methods of can
ning, most of them agreeing on the
government bulletins as the safest
course to follow,
Mrs. Eason Lilley invited the club
women to meet in her home next
meeting.—Club reporter.

74 KILLED BY
AUTOS IN JUNE
—•
370 Injured; Carelessness
And Speeding Blamed
For Increase
Raleigh.—With 74 persons killed
and 370 injured in 254 automobile ac
cidents in the state in June, the total
for the first six months of this year
was brought to 345 persons killed and
2,029 injured in 1,451 accidents since
January 1, 1933, according to figure
released today by Director L. S. Har
ris, of the Motor Vehicle Bureau, of
the State Department of Revenue.
This is 65 more deaths from auto
mobile accidents than were reported
in the corresponding six months in
1932, although more persons were in
jured in more accidents within the
same period in 1932 than so far in
1933.
Comparative figures for the first six
months of this year and the same six
months in 1932 are as follows;
1933: killed, 315; injured, 2,029; ac
cident, 1,451. 1932: killed 280, injured
2,204; accidents, 1,528.
The increase in the number of auto
mobile accident deaths, the number
of injured and accidents for the last
three months is shown as follows;
April: killed 55, injured 353; acci
dents 283. May: killed (>4, injured 335,
accidents 253. June: killed 74, injured
370, accidents 254.
In support his contention that reck
less driving and speeding are to blame
for most of the automobile accidents,
Director Harris pointed out that 31
of the fatal and 74 of the non-fatal
accidents in June were atributed di
rectly to these two causes by the offi
cers reporting them. He also pointed
out that most of the accidents are
collision accidents, with only 20 fatal
and 69 non-fatal accidents that were
not collisions. There wer« five fatal
and 13 non-fatal accidents caused by
drivers being on the wrong side of
the ro#d —another form of reckless
driving—while 4 fatal and 14 non-fatal
accidents were charged to hit-and-run
drivers.
Pine Lands Should Not
Be Burned Over At All
Pine lands should not be "light
burned" to keep down the under
growth of hardwood*. These hard
woods act as an understory for the
pines and should not be destroyed.
They will produce a crop of sound,
straight hardwoods which will make
a future harvest. If these are burned,
the undergrowth will be just a thicket
of sprout clusters, vines, and shrub*
that use soil fertility without produc
ing any marketable crop.
Recent Rains Have Been
Big Helps To Gardens

The recent rains in southeastern
North Carolina have vastly improved
gardens and the corn crop*.
