Grover Phelps Accused of
Stealing Rings From
Woman
(Robersonville Herald)
Grover Phelps, employee in a lo
cal cafe, was carried to Goldsboro last
Saturday to answer in a case charg
ing him with the robbery of two dia
mond rings from a woman near that
town the uight before Christmas. It
was learned here that he was identi
fied by the woman, and that lie is be
ing held for rial in the Wayne Super
ior court.
Traveling in the Goldsboro section
Phelps and Johnnie James stopped to
offer assistance to some people who
had been in an aut,o wreck. The two
men were asked to take the woman to
a hospital in Goldsboro. James drove
the car and Phelps held the woman
in the hack scat. The woman claims
that while on the way to the hospital
Phelps removed the two rings from
her finger, that she was in such a con
dition that she could neither speak or
prevent the removal of her rings. She
further claims that upon her arrival
at the hospital she told nurses of the
robbery, but the defendant heard noth
ing about the charge until officers
came here armed with a warrant for :
his arrest. James and Phelps gave
their names and addresses to police-'
men and' continued to their homes
here. When the woman had suffic-i
jintly recovered she liarl, a warrant
sworn out for Phelps, maintaining he
had robbed her of the rings.
Mr. James says lie knows nothing
about the alleged robbery, as he was
driving He neither herad
nor saw anything in connection with,
Ihe alleged robbery.
