THE LETTER-BOX HOSPITAL To the editor of The Enterprise; Referring to your editorial column of the 9th inst. under caption of "Coun ty Needs a Hospital," and you state that we pay many times more than the cost of same is spent in baseball, football and basketball, and you fur ther suggest that each farmer con tribute one acre in tobacco towards \ financing the hospital. Why not have our representative in ine coming legislature introduce and pass a bill levying a tax of 50 cents on , each ticket sold or on each person en- ] tering the scene of a hall game of any description, either baseball, football, 1 or basketball. It seems to me that this would be j the proper way to raise the desired amount to and equip a hospital, as the farmers arc already taxed to Jeath to pay for school buildings and public balls for use for various amuse ment.>. Respectfully, A TAXPAYER OF MARTIN COUNTY. Oak City, N. C., October 10, 1934. 'start program FOR CONTROL OF l'34 PEANUT CROP Will Provide Payments of More Than $4,000,000 To Growers ! ? A pearrut adjustment program that wil provide benefit payments of more than $4,000,000 to peanut growers has been announced by the Agricultural Adjustment dministratiorl. The purpose of the program is to limit the size of the 1935 cop and to raise the price of peanuts this fall by diverting from the usual markets h part of the 1934 crop and using it for oil or livestock feed, said Lean I. O. Schaub, of State College, Growers who sign to reduce their 1935 crop will get benefit payments on the 1934 crop. If they divert up to 20 percent of their 1934 crop to use a> feed or oil manufacture, they will! also get diversion payments accord-j ing to the amount of the crop divert . ed and the type of peanut* in the crop. "1 I'he diversion payments will I* a ton on Virginia type peanuts, $15 a I ton on Spanish, and $10 a ton on runner types. The benefit payments will be at the rate of $8 a ton on the quantity of peanuts harvested in 1934. This is one reason why the dean is ? urging all grower* to keep accural? records of their 1934 harvest. To encourage oil manufacturers to I uy farmers' sto.'k peanuts, the ad ministraiton will give the manufact urers payments on all peanuts bought direct from the farmer* and used in oil manufacture. The payments will be $1<> a ton on Virginia peanuts, $12 a ton on Spanish peanuts, and $8 a on on runner type (>eanutti. Mrs. VV. K. Anderton, of Roanoke Rapids, visited friends here today. Some People Say: the country is on the toboggan, with bad getting worse. ? But reco: show the U. S. Treasury running 50 per cent ahead of last year and 150 per cent ahead of 1932-33 in ' pick-up" in revenue. Since July 1st, RFC receipts through repayments of loans have exceeded new outlays by $135,000,000, 42 per cent of private loans having been repaid, much in advance of due dates. Wilson, of Bab oon Reports, say general business is now 33 1-3 per cent better than in March, 1933. And a prom inent British economist has just published a book, "The Coming American Boom." However you may interpret these facts, a sav ings account is indicated. If times get worse, you can use your savings for a rainy day; if better, for the sunny days of opportunity.
