Clyde A. Erwin, new state superintendent of public instruction, told several hundred education-minded people who gathered from all over lhe" state Monday night for the third meet ing of the North Carolina Council for the Emergency in Education. ^ Mr. Erwin reported that figures in dicate fully 2,000 teachers have left the profession for other fields more lucrative since July 1. "Unless the coming legislature provides for addi tional salaries for teachers, 1 fear that next year will show- the greatest exo dus of teachers in the history of the state and that loss will be hard to re place. 1 am arguing for the child, which is my chief concern," said Mr. Erwin.
