Tuesday, April 2, 1935 Belgium Goes Off Gold Belgium has cast her lot-with the bi-metal nations, renouncing the gold-bug gang. All debtor nations will eventually have to do the same thing. No nation nor no people can exist and prosper when the value of her property is held down below a fair median line and her securities are kept well above the same line High-priced interest always makes for low priced property. That is why the Morgan econo mists always fight inflation. It makes the property they hold claims on worth more and their bonds worth less. The Tnited States borrows too much and pays in terest on it, when she could issue currency and repay it without interest. When this country went off the gold standard, it reduced interest and helped the common citizen. By cutting the Sherlock interest rate Belgium will find she has taken a wise step. It will help her lift her war debt burdens. Who Is the Ringmaster How many ringmasters are there in this legislature!' It looks tw the old codgers on the outside as if there are certainly as many as three. There are the standpatters of the two lines of think ing occuping the sides of the circle, and then there are the Hopping clowns in the middle. Those fellow- who represent that school of thought which declares that most of the tax increase shall be extracted from the class of people who have to spend all they get for food and clothing. The other line of thinkers claim that the useless businesses, together with those who have big incomes should [jay more of the tax burden of the state. Both of ihese- sides may, to some extent, be wrong - in their opinions, but that class of fellows who are for a Lking on Monday and against it Tuesday must be in a tight jam: and then when they change again on Wednesday and you cannot de|>end on them Thurs day?oh. consistency, thou art indeed a jewel. But who is the ringmaster? Bigger? But Not Better?Truck* When the width of trucks is increufed from 90 to 96 inches, which it seems is about to be done, then it will be wise for the common folks to leave the rood when they see one of the big things coming. Such trucks will cover every inch of the road, so there will be great danger of two big wrecks. On the other hand, if they give safe clearing lor each other, they will kill all the walking folks unless they get in the ditch. Yet we know the truck corporations and car owners all have money, and what have we com mon folks got to do with it, anyway? Getting Down To Earth That congressional committee which is pushing a bill to take the profits out of war is certainly getting its feet on solid ground. Take the profit out of war, and you will not have much need for a world court or for peace treaties. War profiteers are the fellows who make us fight, who get us into debt, who cost us bonuses and pen sions and over half of our taxes. Just think what rascals they are, destroying our lives and taking our property. Nothing New Watauga Democrat The Democrat lost a good job of printing the other day?nothing new, of course?but it's worthy of note when it loses same to the State of North Carolina, which operates institutional plants without the handi cap of salaries, and with the public treasury to take care of breakdowns and other forms of graphics arts grief. With an increasing competition from the State in the printing business, and with an inmost full-time Legislature figuring out new kinds of taxes, disciples of Gutenburg are victims of increased miseries and less strength of endurance. More Pay for Shorter Hours Hertjord County Herald. The lower branch of the General Assembly, acting with more than usual speed, approved a bill increasing the salaries of solicitors before this paper got around to expressing its disapproval, so we'll take the oppor tunity now to put ourselves on record on the ques tion. We'd like to see the school teachers get a de cent break on the pay business, and we believe that there is reason for raising the salaries of some other classes working for and drawing their pay from the people of North Carolina; those nurses in the insane asylums, fur instance, who are jvurking fifteen hours a day for twenty-one" dollars per nfonth. Nlaybe, too, there are some overworked lawyers in the state who serve as solicitors whose entire time is taken up with their duties as prosecutors so that they cannot carry on a lucrative civil practice as their major interest in the law with the state-paid joh of solicitor not a side line; and those should be given consideration, maybe an assistant. But the general run of solicitors that we have notice were well enough paid by a state that must continue to levy a general sales for emergency revenue before the house decided to raise their pay to four thousand five hundred per year. With more and more counties, particularly in this district, establishing recorder's and general county courts which handle a large part of the work that formerly superior court solicitors were paid to prose cute, it seems to us that this raise in pay, with short er hours, might well have been left off until a mroe convenient esason. Still, we guess there are a good many ambitious legislators who want some time to be solicitors. ?3B&. MAKE AND SAVE MONEY Use Eureka 3-8-6 for your tobacco. The extra potash balances your ex tra nitrogen. In addition to the extra potash, it is manufactured on a state formula from the highest grade sources of plant food. It also contains suffic ient magnesium to prevent "sand-drown." It has also been proven in num erous tests that your tobacco sells for enough extra money to pay for all your fertilizer used under your tobacco crop. Save money by using (if you possibly can) your totfacco checks, which you will receive from the government in the next few days, to pay cash for your fertilizer. By doing this, you will save about $4.00 per ton. "PHILLIPS' VERI-BEST FERTILIZERS PRODUCE GOOD CROPS. BECAUSE THEY ARE MADE GOOD" For Sale by: Lindsley Ice Company Williamston, N. C. L. J.
