Editorial Correspondence
Marseille, Aug. 21, 1935
After leaving Paris at 7:50 this morning, I arrived
at Marseille at 7:25 this evening, covering a distance
of 567 miles. We passed through a beautiful country,
most of the time running in the valley of a river, with
hills on either side. We traveled down the edge of
the river much of the way and pasesd through per
haps two dozen tunnels, some of considerable length.
We stopped a short while at Lyons, the second city
of France, and the greatest silk manufacturing city
in Europe and I think in the world.
The hills and bluffs are high, and the Little Alps
Mountains, which appear to be about 1,000 feel high,
art plainly discernible on the west of the river. The
foothills of the real Alps are to be seen to the north.
Southern France is the home of the grape and many
other fruits. Field after field are covered in olive
trees. The olive is an important item of export from
France. Like most of southern and central Europe,
grain and hay are the most important crops pro
duced. 1 saw the first corn today that 1 have seefcjn
Europe, and the crop appears to be very |>oor antPis
now suffering for rain Another reason for the |xiur
crop is that the French |x*ople do not half plow their
land. Plowing with two and three horses is a com
mon sight, yet the furrows are notxto exceed 3 inches
deep. I also saw two mules today, the first 1 have
~ seen on this side of the Atljmk.?l'ltev seem in use
horses for their work animals almost exclusively. I
have not seen a poor horse over here. They all look
to be well bred and well cared for.
Marseille is the third city in size in France and the
chief seaport, with tailroads leaing to alt |>artx of the
Republic The population is how aboUl one million.'"
Practically all the houses are built of stone and many
of them are 500 years old and in good condition. It
?perhaps costs less t^ build of stone than of wood here;?
as every hill seems to be solid rock, much of it of a
limestone formation. Much road building is now go
ing on and much public work is being done. Heavy
telephone lines are being constructed leading south
from Paris right down to the Mediterranean. Some
machinery is being used to build the roads, but man
power is the chief item.
The people of France go in a rush. Every railroad
station seems crowded with rushing people. Leaving
Paris early thie morning, we found the sidewalks
lined with thousands of people, selling practically all
that people need to eat, as well as truck loads of flow
er. I find France, much like England, a land of
flowers.
Our party, which is called No. 7, left the main group
of tourists at Paris this morning. It is composed of
14 people, 3 from Texas, 1 from Oregon, 1 from Kan
sas, 1 from Missouri, 1 from Indiana, 2 from Nebras
ka, 3 from Oklahoma, 1 from Colorado, and 1 from
North Carolina We leave here at 4 p. m. for Alex
andria, Egypt, and the Holy Land. In the party are
one young married couple, five elderly ladies ranging
around the 60-mark, three men with gray hair, and
the other member are young men, all preachers.
News is a very scarce article over here?that is,
good news or home news, which is always the best.
W. C. Manning.
Unhnanced War Talk
After feeling out the world with frightful war talk
during the past several months, the war lords are said
to have about given up hope for arranging a bloody
struggle and there are possibilities now for peace, tem
porarily, at least. Diplomats have worked night and
day trying to preserve peace for themselves, and, in
cidentally, save Ethiopia, but it is the guess of some
that non-payment of the last war debts now is the
ing huge, sums of money pre(>aring for war, but the
resources available in Italy will hardly support a great
war, and those (icople who lost their savings in ad
vancing the World War can hardly be expected to
accept doubtful investments offered by the war lords.
It is certain that had the investors drawn their in
terest and had been repaid their loans in advancing
the great war, credit, no doubt, would be available to
finance another-great struggle so soon. The holders
of worthless German bonds and other bubble securi
ties are content to hold only one bag instead of two,
so to speak.
She Chose the Safer Plan
Mor gat on Aews-Herald.
Yesterday morning's daily papers told the story of
an automobile wreck in which two young people lost
their lives near Mooresville, Kathleen Ferrell, 16, of
Mooresville, and Robert E. Lee, jr., of Albemarle.
Just jttittQo the accident which cost them their lives
one of their companions, Dorothy Plummer, another
16-year old Mooresville girl, deliberately left the car
because she said she did not want to ride further with
the drunken driver, Robert Kearns, of Badin. Her
action probably saved her life and showed rare judg
ment on the part of a young girl. If more people
-would absolutely refuse to stay in a car driven by a
drunk, preferring even to walk and staying alive to
riding to likely death, the' toll on the highways would
be somewhat reduced. The Mooresville girl is to be
commended oft the exercise of good sense. ?
The Ordinance Against Peddling
Morganton Slews-Herald
The Tihvn Council pased this week an ordinance
which has btm needed for some time and one which
will lie pleasing to the merchants of the town. By it
all forms of soliciting or peddling are prohibited. Ex
ception is made,- and rightfully so, of farmers who
sell their own produce and of individuals who seek the
sale of products of their own labor.
For years Morganton has been "pestered" by out
of town itinerants who canvassed the town, some of
them rather regularly, and it is high time that local
merchants, who pay taxes and help support the com
munity in various ways, be given protection against
such unfair com|ietition. The council is to be com
mended for the ordinance against peddling.
