March 10. 1936 Politics To the Front North Carolina wants to wait and see how the tide [urns before taking any action in the problem of crop ontrol We do not wish to be critical of Governor I C. U Khringhaus about his legislative posiiton. Vet, we do regret to see North Carolina trail along jehind South Carolina and Virginia in taking a stand on the tobacco production question when we have twice as much to gain or twice as much to lose as those two state combined have to gain or loae. We fear that politics weighs more in North Caro lina than prosperity. We are afraid to attempt any thing until after the primary because action now may cause some friend to lose a vote. Action after the primary will he too late to even help prevent starva tion prices for the 1936 tobacco crop. l'erhaps if V irginia and South Carolina put the program across, we will trail along and be "first at Bethel and last at Appomattox." Fewer Promises and More Performances While North Carolina is regarded as an agricul tural state, having for its main business the produc tion of farm crops; yet. it has quite a large crop of jioliticians who even work harder than the farmer in trying to raise votes. First of all the politician has to try to tind what the people want and un that object he hangs his promises. If there is any un certainty about tbe desires, the politician has enough instinct to observe carefully. If he sees a mule in a man's field, he will promise perfect and permanent telief for the (xtor, down-trodden farmer. But if he happens to be in a factory town, then comes a flow of love and affection for the poor laboring man. Fin ally he reaches the bosses and the money men and contacts their high powered and highly paid political boss, and there Ire makes no promises. He simply thrusts his head into the yoke; the boss screws him in tight, and there is where the signing up is done. We would like fewer promises and more perform ances. We rather a man would promise that when the feast is spread, he would ring the bell and let every one get his head in the trough with an equal chance at all the blessings of government with the assurance that the oppressors all shall suffer to have their horns sawed off so others may not be hooked out. of this notice or the relief prayed in the complaint will be gran led This 29th day of February, 1936 L B.
