Employ Guineas To Serve As Watchdogs Always alert and watchful, guinea fowls have a special value as dan gei alarms and safety leaders for other poultry, particularly the rat tle-headed turkeys County agents, in many cases, suggest that turkey growers will.do well to include a ftw^eggs of guinea fowls with each lot of turkey eggs. They have the same period of incubation. The guinea chick, reports main tain, is brighter, more alert. It teaches the turkey poults how to find the feed hopper and the warm spots under the brooder. As the two grow older and range together, the young guinea sounds the first alarm when strange animals or predatory hawks appear. To see a few guineas in a large flock of turkeys reminds one of a motor cycle policeman in and out in crowded traffic. sentative, stating this morning that more than 40 checks had already been delivered to Martin farmers by his organization. 3% Penalty ON TAXES After April 1 Pay your taxes now and save the additional 1 per cent which will be added after April 1st. Hot Potato Salad With Frankfurters Wash and cook in boiling salted water 6 to 8 medium-sized potatoes. Cool, remove skins and slice thinly. If you like, cut out in balls with the melon ball scoop cutter, saving the remainder of the potato for po tato croquettes or cakes However, if you do this you will need about 12 potatoes instead of 8. Cover bot tom of a baking dish with potatoes. Saute four slices chopped bacon and 2 small chopped onions. Add to the hot fat 3 tablespoons of cidar vinegar Pour this over the pota toes. Mix well, cover and heat about IS minutes in a slow oven. Line a bowl with lettuce leaves, ar range salad and sprinkle with chopped parsley or paprika. Broiled Frankfurters Slit frankfurters lengthwise, the fat juicy kind, spread lightly with prepared mustard and generously with cheese Wrap a slice of bacon around each and skewer with tooth picks. Broil under a moderate flame until the bacon and franks are done to your taste, about 10 minutes. Serve hot with the salad. Beware of Cotton Seed Sold As New Variety This Year Purchase Of Cotton Seed From Peddlers Is Not Considered Advisable Cheap cotton seed, given a fancy name and a high price, is being peddled in North Carolina again this year. Buying such seed is not only a waste of money, said P. H. Kime, plant breeding agronomist at State College, but it also leads to a seri ous deteriation of the cotton crop. Last year, he said, farmers were offered Mars Rose seed, claimed to bt a marvelous new variety, in packages of $1 each. At this rate, the seed was selling for $50. a bushel. Yet actual tests have shown this seed to be decidedly inferior to the standard varieties recommended for this State. This year, Mars Rose ar^ Dixie 1st Rose, both apparently just alike, are being peddled again for "out rageously high prices,?' Kime went on to explain. Neither of these seed will pro duce as high a $ield as the stand ard varieties, Kime state; their staple is only 15-16 inch in length and irregular, the lint percentage is low and the bolls are small. At the Piedmont branch station near Statesville, experiments with ten varieties showed that Mars Ruse was the lowest in lint yield. A test in Alabama placed Mars Rose near the bottom in a test of 30 varieties, and in Arkansas a test of 40 varieties found Mars Ruse next to the lowest. Similar tests in other States have given like results, Kime pointed out. And although the tests were made with Mars Rose, he said the may be laid of Dixie Rose, a* the two appear to be very much "Don't buy cotton seed," he urg ed, "unless it is from a reliable source and of a vyiety recommend ed for your farm. THE LETTER-BOX ADVERTISING WILLIAMSTON Sunday, February 9. within less than 30 minutes time, I saw Ave large out of-state cars pass through the main street of Williamston, en route to the sunny skies ot Florida. Why didn't all these cars stop here in Williamston and remain here until the warm weather ot i spring comes One reason is be I cause Florida has advertised, and Williamston has not. Every person in Williamston knows there is a Palm Beach, a Mialhi, a St. Peters burg in Florida, but how many per sons in these Florida towns has ever heard ot Williamston, North Caro lina/ Not one perhaps, and if the | Florida towns had not advertised the people here would not know there were such places.. | The chief, impelling attraction that draws people from all over the United States and Canada to Florida is the salubrious climate down there, but the people of the United States and Canada would not know about this fine health giving climate if the people in Flor ida had not told them about it in the newspapers and magazines throughout the country year after year. ? Why are more tourists passing through Williamston than former ly.' One reason, and I suspect the big reason, is because Williamston spent $5 or $10 in advertising, thus putting us on the map in a small way. Less than $10 spent in ad vertising has shown your town to more than 500 tourists. Goodness! Suppose that kind t<?d ,nd generous man had spent $100 in advertising Williamston probably 5.000 would have passed through, and suppose 100- of these tourists had stopped here perma | nently. If 100 had stopped for good, that would have been the biggest thing that ever happened to Williamston. because these persons one sees go wig through in quest of the warm sunny skies of the Southland, are substantial citizens, some are re tired business men, some profession al and others literary, seeking a warm spot where they may enjoy themselves, and no few of them are seeking a place of permanent abode. As we stand on the streets and see this great caravan pass on, remem ber that we have right here what they are all looking for, but they do not know it, if they did thev would stop for keeps. Yes, Williamston has what these wanderers are looking for, has it in a distinctive and a remarkable way Next week, I will tell you what it is, then it will be up to you pro gressive. wide-awake business men of the town to put it before the hun ?--- -- tiic nun .h ,of,Persons who are passing tniough here yearly now.
