Rat Skins Sell Alive When Caught In Trap Recently Chapel Hill.?Mrs & B. Smithey, is no longer troubled with rats which infested her house a short tune ago. Mrs. Smithey had set a large trap in her kitchen and upon retiring she heard the trap snap and a fire strug gle ensue. At intervals there would be silence, then more struggles and cries of pain. Finally all was silent *nie next morning when Mrs Smithey went to investigate there was no rat in the trap, only a skin which was turned completely inside out The rat us his effort to i apparently had skinned himself a live. But another theory u that hie mates, coming to his rescue, did the skinning act when they could re lease him in no other way. The body of the rat was never found. This escapade must have been a warning to the rest of the tribe, for the Smithey household is no longer troubled by them. Lespedeza growing is on the up swing in Wilson County. Cold Weather Last Winter Did Not End War Against Insects Flea Beetles Are Certain To Attack Tobacco Plant Beds The severe cold weather of the past few months did not bring a cessation of hostilities in the war between man and insects. The brief truce is now over, said C. H. Brannon, extension entomolo gist at State College, and good far mers are getting ready to renew the fight. Although exceedingly cold tem peratures kill some insects, he said, enough will survive the winter to seriously damage the crops in the spring and summer unless preven tative measures are taken. The boll weevil can wreak havoc with the cotton fields if weather conditions during the growing sea son are favorable to its develop ment. Cotton growers should prepare now for weevil control, he said What battle was ever won by wait ing until the enemy appeared be fore starting to get ready for the conflict? he queried. He urged tobacco growers to watch their plant beds carefully for signs of Ilea beetle injury. When beetles arc found, apply poisons ac cording to recommendations of the county farm agents. Horn worms are a continual source of los sto tobacco growers, but mechines have been devised to aid in their control. The same machine can often be used in cot ton fields too. Brannon added. Derris dust containing three fourths of one percent rotenone is the ryost effective poison against Mexican Bean beetles, he stated; and it is not poisonous to human beings. Orchardists who have not yet applied the winter scale spray should complete the applications before it is too late in the spring. Also get ready to follow the spray ing and dusting schedule for spring und summer. Spraying calendars may be se cured free from the agricultural editor at State College, Raleigh.
