Talk and Work Against War The I'niled States is hurrying warshijis off to Spain for the purpose of |>rotecting Americans. We have heard many people say they would never leave their native land to fight a foreign enemy. We remember April, 1898, when Spain was then bearing down on her colonies. It was then that Ad miral Dewey slipped into Manilla Hay on a bright Sunday morning and sank the S|>anish fleet We take it that if the Spaniards begin destroying American property and live* that our warships will lie used with the same promptness that Dewey's lleet was. Certainly, we are not mad with S[iain. nor is she tnad with u- Yet when we consider that wars are not started by reason, but are brought about usually by come spontaneously unfriendly incident or dare ups. we need not be surprised at anything. Yet, withal, let us all work and talk against war. Talks Too Much It may be that the Asfceville n.order ca.w is being handled well We have at lead had many promises that something was.going Jo crack within 48 hours " But nothing has crackd yet. Sheriff Brora amy be from Scotland Yard, for aO k know, although we doubt it; he seems to talk too much. The last report is that none of the old gang is guilty and that the sheriff is off oa a new trail. Of course, somebody is guilty of the dime, but so far there seems to be only a guess as to who the guil ty party or parties may be. The strangest thine; seems to be that such a thing could occur in a high class bote! and yet nobody seems to know any thine A Penitent Coward Burt Crow tier left his home, his wife, and five chil dren at Kinsey, N. C., 43 years ago. He was beard from no more until last week, when he returned?at the age of 14 and knocked on the door where his family lived, to hod only one son and a daughter liv ing, his wife and three of the children having died since bis desertion over two score years ago He stood at the dour?a penitent coward -knock ing for admittance, with nothing but a wasted life to present to the world, with all opportunity to serve his family behind him. because most of them have passed on to their rewards Why will men he deserters' Do Not Destroy the Fish The water of Kaslern North Carolina I induced 963.000 pounds of shad far market in 1897. Ill 193/ the amount of shad scot to market from these waters had fallen to 927,000 pounds, according to statistics from the U. S. Bureau of Fisheries. These figures prove that the world's best fish will soon become extinct, uAless drastic measures are talc en to protect them. It seems that all of the spawn ing grounds are being swept with nets, so that there is no place for the young fish to be raised. let's not destroy the fish. Safety Slogans Morgan! on Xnri-Herald Every year several boys have hands blown off or eyes put out with dynamite caps. A dynamite cap is alojut an inch long and a fourth inch in diameter, and hoys do not realize how dangerous they are. Ev-, cry |iarcnt of boys should explain the danger of han dling dynamite caps. It requires 43 feet to stop a car traveling 20 miles an hour, at 30 miles it requires 80 feet, at 40 miles 128 feet, at 50 miles 186 feel. No intelligent prism will rock a boat while buat riding. There L- no use making any suggestions ur giving advice to such a person The wisest and safest plan is not to go riding with a moron of this type. Don't jay walk; cross streets at intersections.
