Closing Program
In Colored School
A crowded program is featuring
the commencement season for the
local colored school, Principal E. J.
Hayes announcing eight events on
the six-day schedule.
The first of the events, "High
School in Excelsis," was held last
evening. This evening the seventh
graders, and there is a sizeable
group of them, are featuring the
program series. Rev. R. I. Johnson,
rector St. Cyprian Episcopal church,
New Bern, will preach the annual
sermon Sunday afternoon at 3:30
p. m. Next Monday night, the gram
mar grade pupils appear in a comic
operetta. A review of exhibits by
the home economics and manual arts
groups is scheduled for Tuesday at
2 p m. The semors hold their class
exercises Tuesday night.

will hold their anniversary celebra
tions Wednesday afternoon at two
o'clock, and that evening at eight,

it was pointed out by Coleman W
Roberts, executive commissioner of
North Carolina's exhibit that in
making the selection of the person
nel, it was necessary to take into
consideration the applicant's educa
tion, personal appearance, health,
1 geographical location, etc., and while
many hundreds of applications were
! received, only a limited few could
be selected. Mr. Roberts further
stated that while the parents of the
applicants each thought his or her
daughter was one of the most beau
tiful, and snnoneuf the most hand
some, everyone else thought the
same thing about theirs, and the
staff had to be selected according
to the best judgment of the commis
sion.
It was further stated that the
group comprising the tour will cov
er 2000 miles and will visit the prin
cipal cities and resort areas in the
State from Murphy to Man ten?___
According to Mr. Roberts the pur
pose of the tour is to further ac
quaint and to refresh the memories
"i the world's fair attendants with
the tourist, agricultural and indus
trial development that is taking
place in North Carolina and their
possibilities for advancement. Many
hotels, chambers of commerce and
communities throughout North Car
olina are playing host to these young
-men and young women on this tour.
These attendants will be on duty
at the world's fair from 10 in the
morning until 10 at night, and will
serve in the capacity of North Car
olina's exhibit and intelligently an

concerning the State.
Mr. Huberts further stated that
North Carolina's exhibit will not be
one of products nor will it provide
its guests with any unusual thrills
or any special forms of entertain
ment, but is purely an inspirational
exhibit to encourage investment and
travel 111 North Carolina. North Car
olina's exhibit will be located in the
Cburt of States.

Plans were made public today by
L. W Anderson, Robersonville
school principal, of the Roberson
ville school finals. Commencement
proper begins Sunday, April 23, at
2:30 o'clock when Rev. C. T. Thrift,
of Halifax, will preach the bacca
laureate sermon.
On Monday night, April 24th, the
seniors win present meir play, "The
Man in the Green Shirt," a three
act farce by Myrtle Elsey.
The class night exercises will be
held Tuesday night, April 25th, at
8 o'clock. At this time the seniors
will present an original two-act
play entitled "Every Boy's Dream,"
directed by Susie Thrift and Ray
mond Snipes.
The regular commencement night
program will begin promptly at 3
o'clock on Wednesday evening,
April 26th, when his excellency,
Governor Clyde R Iloey will be the
principal speaker. Plans have been
made to accomodate a record crowd.
The grounds will be lighted and
loud speakers will be placed on both
sides of the building as well as in
the halls. No seats will be reserved
except-two for each of the grad
uate's parents. Admission to those
scats will be by card. Hugh Horton
will introduce Governor Hoey, and
the high school glee club will ren
der several selections. Wilbur James,
class valedictorian, will talk brief
ly on our changing curriculum, and
Chandler Smith, class salutatorian,
will talk on "The Change from the
Traditional type of School to the
Modern Type."
Diplomas will be awarded to pos
sibly 54 students, Robersonville's
largest graduating class. Around 55
seventh grade students will also
graduate. Besides these, 17 students
will be awarded certificates show
ing thut they huvc completed?tht
equivalent of a twelfth grade course.
Around thirty commercial students
will be awarded certificates.
On Thursday evening following
commencement night, Mrs. Selma
Meadows will present her piano pu
pils in their annual post commence
ment recital.

Bethel Man Charged
With Serious Assault
Greenville, April 17.?What Depu
ty Sheriff R. W. King described as a
"cutting scrap" about midnight Sat
urday in Bethel resulted in one be
ing indicted on a charge of assault
with a deadly weapon, and another
being confined to his home with sev
eral gashes from a knife.
Jim Simmons is charged with the
cutting and Walter Keel was the
man cut. Keel was brought to the
hospital here, but was released
shortly after being admitted. Sim
ons is out on bond pending a hear
ing before Magistrate H. L. Jenkins
when Keel is able to attend court

veterinarian. Dogs will be vaccinated at office of Dr. Osteen when he is not
out on a clinic.
