Martins Take Two Out of Three from Leafs; In Third Place
South Conauers North, 6-3, Lust Annual All
Williamgton Splits
With Rocky Mount
Sunday Afternoon
Home Runs Play a Deciding
Part in Outcome of
Both Battles
?
The Williamston Martins split a
double bill in Rocky Mount last Sun
day afternoon under a sweltering
sun, winning the first game 7-6, and
dropping the finale 3-2.
This split raised the Martins to
third position in the Coastal Plain
loop and tightened the race consid
erably. At the present time, only a
half game separates the third team
from the fifth place Leafs, while
Goldsboro rests in sixth spot, a mere
game and a half out of third. The
Martins are six games behind the
second place Greenville Greenies. So
it looks.as though fireworks and
pressure will be on in a large degree
as the circuit goes into its final month
on Friday.
The deciding runs in the first af
fray came in the ninth when Skipper
Frank Rodgers homered over the
left field wall with one on. Elmer
Cone hit a four-base blow in the
seventh to keep the locals in the
ball game
Pea Green started the initial bat
tle and hurled creditably until the
eighth when he was relieved by Har
ry Humphries who finished the game
and received credit for the win.
Home runs also played a big part
in the nightcap, with the Martins
scoring both of their runs in such a
manner and Rocky Mount counted
one homer
Tuckey drove a pitch over the left
field fence in the fifth, and Charlie
"Donald Duck" Wilcox, as a pinch
hitter, in the seventh, did likewise.
Slim Gardner went the route for
the Martins, giving up five hits.
Tuckey hit safely twice to lead the
locals in this game

Public
Opinion....
Bv "BUFF'
Our vote for the biggest pack of
wolves goes to Rocky Mount. They
even criticise their own players
when they are winning . . . The um
piring Sunday afternoon was slight
ly on the "lousy" side . . A Leaf
player went into home plate with a
good slide, when Clyde Pettus stoop
ed and tagged him on the chest . . .
According to "everybody" there was
no possible way the runner could
have been out . . . But Greene said
he was, and if you don't think a howl
went up and a razz went out, you
should have been there . Another
time, in the first game, Daniels call
ed 4 balls on Elmer Cone who went
to first filling the bases. An argu
ment ensued and it was decided that
the pitcher had made only three bad
pitches . . . What kind of "second
guessing" do you call that?
BEST STORY OF THE WEEK
?The wolves had been giving
Babe Tuekey a thorough raizin'
in Rocky Mount during the sec
ond game, and when he went to
the plate in the fifth, they really
gave him the works. Not to be
outdone the Babe promptly pro
ceeded to slam one out of the
park and on crossing home plate,
he curtsied to his "admiring"
fans.
The Martins' power at the plate
has picked up considerably accord
ing tQ the last official- report- from
the Howe News Bureau which in
cluded games of Monday, July 21st
. . . Ches Sparr with a mark of .325
has batted in 62 runs . . Bill Shel
ton, dependable second baseman, is
slugging at the .312 mark, having
driven in 26 scores Charlie "Don
ald Duck" Wilcox is now hitting over
300 for the first time in his profes
sional career, driving in 19 runs with
a mark of .301 Fred Hoyle, hustl
ing- i fght todder iV h.itilh|F,'.91k) an#
has knocked in 29 runs . Slim
Gardner's mark is 277 Skipper
Rodgers has hit in 52 runs with a
274 average . . Johnny Byrum. lo
cal lead-off man, is at .272 and has
driven in,23 runs . All the others
have increased their averages to some
extent . . .
Pete Kunis with a reeord of 10
wins and five losses leads the Mar
tins mound staff . . . Slim Gardner
has eight victories and six defeats
. Pea Green's average is 7 wins
and 6 defeats . . Harry Humphries
has won 2 and lost 7 . . . Ken Rymor
has won 2 and lost 5 . . .
According to reports, at .least six
big league scouts were in attendance
at the All-Star game in Wilson last
night, and from this corner, Fred
Hoyle looked just about as good as
anybody on either team. The pitch
ing on both sides was "rough" in
spots, the umpires had a good night,
and all in all, everybody had an en
joyable trip.

Vernon Bunting Is
Singl es Champion
t
In the second annual City Tennis
Tournament recently concluded
here, a new singles champion was
crowned. Vernon Bunting, one of
last year's semi-finalists, conquered
all opposition and won the singles
title by defeating defending champ
ion. Bosko Anderson, 6-4, 6-4, in two
hard-fought sets.
For the second straight year, the
winner of the singles title was co
winner of the doubles honori as
Bunting paired with Bill Spivey to
upset the defending tandem of Rush
Bondurant and Anderson. The close
score of 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, was indicative
of the hard struggle staged by the
foursome.

SCHEDULE
Wednesday, July 30.
Baptists vs. Christians.
Episcopalians vs. Methoterians.
In the next to the last regular
scheduled doubleheader of the local
Softball loop, played here last eve
ning, the league leading Baptists put
their standing definitely on ice as
they overwhelmed the now lowly
Episcopalians by a 10-2 score in the
second game. The hustling Methoter
ians. until recently the cellar occu
pants, and who were kicked about
as step-children during the early
part of the season, have really hit
their stride, having won their last
four games straight. The Christians
were the latest victims of the Meth
os. as they went down last night by
an 8-4 count, in a game that was
headed for a shutout, but errors in
the final stanza at crucial moments
allowed the Spivey boys to count
four times on two hits. Ernest "Ma
tuza" Mears pitched well, as the win
ners built up an 8-0 lead, featured
by a 6-run uprising in the fifth in
ning Roger Critcher, with two for
three, led the winners, though he
was piisla'd by four teammates .with
two for four. Jack Sullivan Kit .500

SWITCH GAMES
Upon request of the New

play the Bears here on Friday
night instead of Saturday as was
originally scheduled.
New Bern is staging a big cel

to give people there an oppor

The Martin management was
only too glad to oblige.
So, the Martins play New

First Game,
Ernest "Matuza" Mears pitched
two-hit ball last Friday night when
his Methoterians captured ;? 5-0 vic
tory over the league leading Bap
tists. despite the strategy of Man
ager Harcum Grimes. In the sec
ond game, the Christians were forc
ed to rally in the last two innings to
defeat an eight-man Episcopalian
team, 7-6.
Mears had the Baptists handcuff
ed completely in the opening tilt,
with the Methoterians displaying
their best form of the season. A
scratch single by Dick Miller in the
fourth, and a double by Bosko An
derson in the seventh frame account
ed for the powerful attack of the
loop leaders.
The Methos' big irwung came IS the
fifth when four runs were scored on
four hits and four errors.
Jojo Thigpen was top hitter for the
winners with three for four, while
Parson Piephoff had a triple and sin
gle for three.
The Christians edged out the Epis
copalians in the nightcap, 7-6, but
there was little honor attached to
the victory, for Pitcher John Hardy
had only two outfielders. At that,
he shut out the Christians for four
innings, but his control left him in
the fifth and a walk, an error and
four hits, including a home run by
Fenner Wallace with one on pro

Before a crywd of more than 2,000
fans, the Northern forces defeated
Manager Frank Rodgers^Southern
teuni, G 3, in the fourth annual All
star exhibition id the Coastal Plain
League in Wilson last night. League
President Hay II Goodmon awarded
the players of both teams and the
umpires tie pins in pro-game cere
monies.
Skipper Rodgers selected his team
from players on Williamston, Rocky
Mount, Tarboro and Greenville ros
ters, while Manager Bill Herring
had charge of the Southern force
players from Wilson. Goldsboro.
New Bern and Kinston.
The North opened up with a run
in the second on Kurst's double and
Jenkins' single. But the South
promptly knotted the count when
Lefty Long walked in a run after al
lowing two singles and an intention
al walk.
The North went ahead again in
?the third on a walk, Ware's double
and Sudol's single.
The South went ahead in the
fourth to stay, greeting our own
Pete Kunis with a 3 run uprising,
which resulted from a walk and
three hits. The fielding during this
inning was far from tops, with one
or two of Jhe balls which dropped far
hits on the "blooper" variety.
Fred Hoyle was tops in the North
forces, getting a single in the fourth
inning and a double in the seventh
Charlie "Donald Duck" Wilcox was
unable to hit safely during his two
times at bat. but caught a good
game. Ches Sparr replaced Sudol
at first base in the sixth, and did not
hit in his only attempt.
Pete Kunis pitched the fourth,
fifth and sixth innings, allowing
four runs op five hits He struck out
one and walked one. and was charg
ed with the defeat.
For * he South, Joe DeMasi had a
double and single for three official
attempts to lead at bat, while Stdrtiiy
Gales was next with two for four.
Very noticeable was the absence
of 1 nunc runs durina tin* contest with
the sluggers of neither team being
unable to clout one out of the park
