Proposes New Tax On Large Profits! Treasury Secretary Morgenthau's proposal tor 100 per cent tax of all profits above 6 per cent on capital in vestment, and administration's pro posed broadening of social security program highlighted the week's de velopmenta in the capital. OdposI tlon of SPAB's Donald Nelson, Price Administrator Leon Henderson and others indicates the Morgenthau pro posal has little chance to go through but the general theory is it was made more as a lever to be used in getting a compromise, milder measure than with expectation it would pass "as is". Social security broadening would extend the "coverage" of unemploy ment insurance to just about double the number of persons now coming under the law's provisions (40,000, 000), taking in such new classifica tions as domestic servants, agricul tural workers, and the self-employ ed. It also would increase the amount of old-age benefit payments. Nothing definite was said at the outset as to sire of increase in "takes" from em ployer and employee, but estimates ranged from "half-again" as much to "several times" as much. It was described as an "anti-inflation" move to soak up excess purchasing pow er. Lumber Workers To Get Wage Increase Increased wage rates for the. ma jority of North Carolina sawmill workers were announced this week by Forraat H. Shuford, commission er of labor. A minimum of 35 cents an hour in the lumber industry will go into effect November 3rd. The establish ment of the new minimum wage re quirements in the industry was made under wage orders issued by Gen eral Phillip B. Fleming, administra tor, Wage and Hour Division, U. S. Department of Labor, upon recom mendation by industry committees. The new wage orders apply to em ployees engaged in the production of goods for interstate commerce. Mr. Shuford points out that the minimum wage now required in the industry under the Wage and Hour law is 30 cents an hour. "According to the records of the Department of Labor," says Shuford, "payment of a maximum of 30 cents an hour has been the general practice of employ ers in the lumber industry." Required payment of at least 33 cents an hour in the lumber indus try will increase the wage rates of about 27,500 lumber workers in North Carolina. ? Miss Kathleen Rogers visited in Washington yesterday. At Washington Fair Next Week Dazzling redheads, beautiful blondes, glamorous brunettes, are an integral part of any mid way and fair. Above are but a 14,412 Pounds Of Milk Hrouftht To Setc Station The first day the new milk receiv ing station in Spruce Pine opened, farmers brought in 14,412 pounds of milk, says F. L. Woodard. farm agent of Mitchell County. The nation's sixth largest Army Post is Fort Jackson, where 41.000 troops are in training few of thr "ftmmt !" that will be scon on the mile-long midway of the Art Lewis Shows coming to the Beaufort County Fair in Washington all next week. Customer Spending Showing No Let-up 1 While still more tax clouds loom on the Washington horizon, custom er spending shows no let-up. Either because of tax outlook, or in spite of it?probably both ? retail store sales showed rousing comeback from late-summer lull. Two-day rush for luxury purchases before new tax rates went into effect produced buy ing jams such as seldom seen except just before Christmas. Even outdid the July "silk stocking stampede" . Other indexes still pointing sharply upward: Carloadings hit largest volume since November of 1930 . . . Commercial advances (for enterprises) by New York City banks rose to best levels in a decade . . . Bell System gained 142,000 tele phones in September, the biggest month's increase in its history . . . Barron's general business index, ad justed to long-term trends, has sta bilized at around 103?somewhat un der July peak of 105.4, but far ahead of pre-war figure of 71.8 for Septem ber 1, 1939.
