Enemy Experiences Reverses On Many Far-Flung Fronts (Continued from page one) Leningrad and east of Lake Ladoga, the Russians claimed an advance of two miles at one point, while Berlin itself acknowledged htat Axis forces were fighting "defensive battles" there. There was little detail about the progress of the action on the Kare lian Isthmus west of Ladoga. Word that Russian long-range guns now commanded Smolensk, which is only about 50 miles short of the White Russian frontier, sup ported many recent indications that German outposts soon would be put under a powerful and decisive gen eral assault, frontally and by envel opment. 4* ?Air raid warnings were heard ov er large areas in Japan today, but no details were disclosed Authorized reports stated that the Japs had suffered mouting losses in advancing on Panay, that the at tacks on the Corregidor fortress had "eased off" following concerted raids. Still on the initiative, Ameri can and Australian bombers scored successes in recent attacks on New Guinea. Pierre Laval, selling out his peo ple for his own personal gain, has openly announced a brazen policy calling for closer collaboration with Hitlei. He is~traveling to Paris to re port his recent successes in wedding France to Germany. It was reported today that 60,000 tons of shipping had been turned over to Japan at Laval's direction. The Vatican, fee bly offering to explain its action on developments of 20 years ago, has now virtually established relations with Japan. While the weaklings and hirelings of Hitlet jump to play the role of Mussolini, the French peo ple continue their sabotage work ev en though the action exacts supreme sacrifices. More French hostages were shot today. Possibly trying to explain their losses -in Russia, German military authorities were quoted as saying that the* Soviet is stronger today than were the combined forces of the Allies in the last World War. The explanation was heard along with reports telling of the near wrecking of the German air power over Rus sia The war is causing England to tighten its belt agairi This time the people are being advised that sources Ambassador Leahy's wife died in France this morning, and there is some doubt when the ambassador will be able to report to Washington for conferences in connection with the turn of recent events in France. The removal of enemy aliens from Atlantic Coast areas is now consid ered a possibility. It has been stated /hat enemy submarines were receiv ing vital information about ship movements and other war develop ments in this country.
