Loose Hungry Lions
Here Last Evening
Due to some misunderstanding no
dinner was prepared tor the regular
meeting, and a group of hungry lions
were loosed on the streets. No hu
man was attacked, as far as it could
be learned, but Doc Eugene Rice
gently coaxed several of the mem
bers of the Lions Club wi'h fero
cious uppetites to lunch counters and
pacified them with rare steak din
ners. No damage was done and
whether they know it of not, the
club members aided the war effort
by skipping the meal and saving a
lot of fat for firing guns.
Strange as it may seem the entire
membership, excepting the presi
dent, reported when no eats were
prepared. And without eats, there
was no business.

Fighting On Allied
War Front Reported
(Continued from page one)
servers believing that the Allied
drive off the Solomons has greatly
altered the Jap plans for a conquest
of Siberia and India. The battle, de
spite reports that the Japs are re
treating, is believed to have entered
its third phase and may prove to be
a big turning point in the war. Un
official reports state that the Japs
have lost as many as fifty ships,
sunk or damaged, including one large
aircraft carrier, a small aircraft car
rier, a battleship, at least four cruis
ers, several transports, several de
stroyers and a number of unidenti
fied vessels. It is now believed that
eleven Jap aircraft carriers, said at
one time to be all owned by the Japs,
have either been sunk or damaged.
Hut that is the rumor that the Japs
have twelve more either in the fleet
or nearing completion. No detailed
reports on Allied losses have been
received, but the communiques refer
to the fighting in the Pacific as fav
orable to the Allies. The Japs arc
said to have lost 54 planes in the
fighting there.
China is making real progress
| against the Japs these days, regain
ing much territory lost including an
important air field only a few hours
| away from Tokyo.
The British are stepping up their
raids over Germany and occupied
territory. Last night a Polish port
was bombed along with other enemy
targets. The raid was a costly one.
however, as the British lost thirty
planes. The Allies are over the con
tingent today, and observers declare
that the Solomon fighting and the
air war are making the enemy alter
many of his plans.
In this country, meatless days are
believed near, President Roosevelt
stating today the practice would
make available 35 or 40 ships for
transporting supplies to our men
across the seas.

for their crimes.

Tire quotas will have to follow a
