The fire spread to other buildings, ineluding the old hotel, but was checked before much damage was done to them. No estimate on the loss could be had, but all the furniture on the second floor and most of the family’s clothes were burned. The family had just moved into the home about five weeks ago. : With Apologies j i From our manufacturers ; for the delay, due to the > shortage of Manpower . , ; r I They Did Get Here = A Fine Assortment Of Topcoats, Suits i For Men and Boys. OPEN SATURDAY To accommodate its patrons during the rush, the local post office will remain open all day Saturday, Assistant Postmaster F. E. Wynne announces. The Christmas mailing rush is on in full swing, a late report coming from the office here stat ing that more than 7,000 cards and letters have been handled, on an average, during the past several days, or about three to four thousand more than were handled a year ago. Possibly more people are mailing earlier this year, and the volume will decrease during the next few days from the figure recorded a year ago. Draftees Stranded On Way To Center Between 75 and 80 Martin County men, ail but six of them colored draf tees reporting to an Army induction center, were stranded in Tarboro on Wednesday night when a heavy snow fall and icy highways blocked busses and traffic, in general. The colored draftees, traveling in a regular con voy with more than one hundred others from surrounding counties, were stranded in the Edgecombe capital. Just how they made out dur ing the enforced stay there could not be learned, but action was said to have been taken immediately by draft board authorities and the Army. The transportation compan ies were advised to properly feed and house the men in Tarboro or deliv er them to their destination. The first news telling the men had been stranded came when William Midg ett, hotel bell boy, called and gave a graphic description of his plight. He ! casually suggy^ted that, in his own opinion, it was possible to maintain traffic from Tarboro back to Wil liamston. Seven white men, scheduled to re port for active duty earlier that morning, missed the early bus. Ail but one of them reported at the hus station shortly before noon, and they, too, reached Tarboro where they were caught in the traffic block.
