Hugs Manila Nurse CAPTAIN Mary Lohr (left) greets with a hug Maj. Maude Davison, 59, upon the latter’s arrival at San Francisco, via hospital plane from the Philippines. Maj. (International) blood’s good.” But sometimes good blood isn't enough to prevent infec tion. Statistics show that millions of people die each year because they neglect these simple first aid rules. ! Let any cut bleed freely, but not too ’much, to clean the wound out. Then apply a little antiseptic. When this is dry, cover the wound with a ster ile gauze bandage and bind it on with adhesive tape. Make sure the gauze is sterile, if it is not it will un do all you have done so far. Always make sure the hands are clean before issuing first aid. The reason for this eautionable bandaging is simple but great. No matter how small a cut may be, some infection germs may enter the blood stream through it, if it is not treated properly. Then the germs will thrive and multiply great ly, and the white corpuscles, or "fighting ships of the body,” may be outnumbered and beaten. Then comes infection and maybe serious illness or death. First aid is what the name implies: the first aid given before treatment by a doctor. A doc tor should by all means see the wound if it is deep or is inflicted around a place where animals may have lived.
