Has Block Maker
Purchased last September the
Robersonville Ice and Coal Com
pany expects to install soon a
Joitrite cement block maker. This
new machine makes cement
blocks by power and automatical
ly. According to Mr. C. M. Hurst,
who witnessed the operation of
the machine before it was pur
chased, the Joitrite will make
300 blocks each day and they are
guaranteed to be uniform and
every block has the same amount
of ingredients.
Part of the machinery has al
ready arrived and the owner and
operator expects to begin operat
ing the new plant on a fairly large
scale within a short time. Mr.
Hurst is now making well tile,
heavy duty, which may be used in
large ditches or under bridges.
The Robersonville Ice and Coal
Company has had 15 years ex
perience in making tile and ce
ment blocks and with the arrival
of the new machine the owners
expect to expand their business
and serve a large section of east
ern Carolina.

New Way To Take
Oxygen From Air
——
The New York Time* reports
the disclosure by Dr. Melvin Cal
vin, University of California sci
entist, of a new and greatly sim
plified method of obtaining oxy
gen from the air for industrial
use, one of the hitherto undisclos
ed wartime achievements of
I American scientists. The process
works, it was stated, on the same
principle as that by which the hu
man body take* oxygen from the
air and into the blood. Air is
blown through a tube which is
lined by a specially compounded
red-colored chemical. This chem
ical absorbs oxygen. When the
absorption reaches its maximum,
the air flow is stopped and the
chemical gives off its oxygen
when the tube is heated. The
oxygen is pumped into storage
tanks and the process is repeated
again and again. Dr. Calvin saic
the method was used to supplj
oxygen for welding and other op
orations in the South Pacifie
r
where regular base supplies were
j not available. The method was
conceived while researchers were
looking for something to indicate
J oxygen changes in submarines.
He submitted the idea to the Na
tional Defense Research Commit
tee which financed further
studies.

war conditions now sharply paral
lel those existing in 1919.
Blue mold has appeared in most
flue-cured tobacco communities of
the state this year but control
programs are the most extensive
