It is Mr. (lanes' privilege' to withdraw from thi Democratic Party, and somehow or MMKkttM*’'-'' respect for the man was greatly increased when he took the stand he did. It is only wished that others would throw away their false banners and march under the one they believe in and stop looking to the Democrats' for favors and then turning to favor the Republicans. One would not have to tax his mind an iota to name a dozen; yes, two dozen big wigs who have looked to the Democrats for election and then turned and committed political adultery with the Republicans. There’ll Ire few tears shed over Mr. Hanes’ exit from the party. Division Is l.lror Bertie I.edger-Advance The vote in the United States Senate Wed nesday on the bill that would ban industry wide bargaining by labor unions caused a voting .split between the two gentlemcyi representing North Carolina in tha1 austere body. The senior senator, Clyde R. Hoev, voting for the bill and William B. Umstead voting against it. Umstead made his position crystal clear when he said, “The vote speaks for itself.” Hoe> was not so specific on this point when ho was approached. The difference on the vote by the two senators and the ability of one and inability of the other to make his position under s: indable is no surprise to most of the peo ple in North Carolina, since Umstead has long been known for the clarity of his thinking and Hoey has been principally known for a silvery but ambiguous tongue Hoey is a nice old man. who has been in the harness of the North Carolina Demo cratic machine for lo, these many years. He was governor for four years. And he thinks in the same style that he dresses- -late Vic torian.
