By Ruth Taylor This i .litorml pages of every newspaper, the e.'!t;!'ii ntainrs whose voices ring out u>er the ran in dial, all proclaim the same ; thins, is nageiis nt and Labor must get to gether. Prejudice or bias for one side or another often colors this clamor, but it still rises from both sides -and, far more important to both, from the great middle ground of the public, who arc tired of the strife and who ere keenly conscious of their own dan ger if an agreement is not reached. In this outers for better understanding j lies the golden opportunity for those who are hone in- ■ pH sincerely trying to bring about bet!i r industrial relations. Once they have arrived at the facts, then is the opportunity for a permanent solution. Both sides will have to be ready to give up something for the common good, for only when there is a real feeling of partnership can there be a relationship that will endure. The problem is on.? for the whole coun tiy And it is up to the people themselves not to be swayed by prejudice for or against either side in the dispute, not to penalize either side—but to decide in the interests of all the people of the United States—employ ers, employees and public alike. ChamflfHtn Committee Christian Science Monitor “The more it changes, the more it remains the same,” a French saying about politics runs. “Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose'” The way the U. N. committee hand ling the Palestine problem changed itself in to a General Asembly and then back again into a Political Committee the other day must have reminded many onlookers of the French saw. Anyway, the procedural acro batics were not only amusing and amazing, but lubricative. The General Assembly had already direct ed the committee to hear the Jewish Agency. The Arab states then demanded equal treatment for the Arab spokesmen. It was then pointed out to Arab members that the committee wished to hear the Arab case, and so would not need an order from the As sembly. But this did not satisfy the Arab delegates. They wanted “legal” equality in addition to factual aquality. They refused to take part in the discus sion until the committee found a way to pro vide this equality. The committee did this by voting itself into an Assembly—the Gen eral Assembly of the United Nations, no less. It could do so, because in composition the committee and the Assembly are identical. Then, as the Assembly, it directed the com mittee to hear the Arab voice. Drinking doesn’t drown our sorrows; it only irrigates them.—Selected.
