Martin County’s struggle for better health
will be materially boosted the latter part of
this and early next month when the State
Health Department in cooperation with the
County Health Department and other
agencies sends equipment for a mass X-ray
survey of all its people fifteen years old or
Older.
The service, the mosl extensive ever offer
ed. is certain to prove a boon to the health
of our people in that it will help ferret out
the dread disease and place the victims in a
position to combat it in the early stages of
its development.
While much has been accomplished in
public health, the service now being offered
brings the movement directly to the peo
ple. It is a golden opportunity that no one
should allow to slip by, and it is sincerely
believed that every person in the county,
fifteen years old or older, will take advan
tage of the service.
There are quite a few persons in this coun
ty who are victims of tuberculosis in its
early stages. The victims could be any one
of us, and to find out their identify and place
them m a position to help themselves a mass
J>-ray survey is necessary.
7 The survey is being conducted without

cost to the individual. Only a few seconds
are required to make an X-ray. Every
individual stands to pain much and lost'
nothing. It is up to the people to get be
hind the survey, have their X-ray made and
see that all others g 't to the mobile units
and have theirs made during the period be
ginning January 27 end ending February 14.

lands. It is fairly certain that we can’t buy
it for others. And the United States, re
gardless of its might and undisputed power,
cannot force democracy on any people. And
neither can Russia force other peoples to
accept the isms. Power may gain an upper
hand for awhile, but in a brief time the
wishes of the people will rise to the top to
challenge bribery and acts accomplished by
force.
There was a time when man struggled
with economic and social problems, but now
man is his own big problem. We seek to
gain our way by force or bribery, forgetting
the simple basic truths. We talk about our
magnanimity, but in truth we are only
boasting, looking for something to reward us
tenfold.
Tin* Harriers May Fall
There are no inherent and insuperable
barriers to the establishment of a new hu
manity. There are blindness, laziness and
selfishness, and these can retard and are re
tarding its advent. The present need is for
multitudes who, like the rebel in Patmos,
see a new earth. An enlightened priest in
the age of Alfred the Great, announcing the
practicability of even the hinds, ,llains and
serfs becoming so instructed that all of them
could read Holy W'it and the ballads and
chronicles of the time, would have been un
frocked as possessed of the devil. Had some
crank in feudal times taught tl at the com
mon folk could be free to third, talk, vote
and take part in government without so
cial chaos and red ruin he would have risk
ed the stake. Today all these things are ac
cepted as commonplaces. Our dieam. too,
will surely crime to pass. Posterity will only
wonder how it could ever have been ques
tioned, and why its obvious advent was so
