Oak City's Roosters are still trv
| ing to make it into the fourth spot
i in league standings now held by
the Everetts Cubs but even the
most optimistic Rooster fan had to
admit today that the road is a
rugged one since Everetts decis
ively defeated the Bear Grass
Bears in Williamston Tuesday
night and took a two and a half
game lead over the idle Roosters.
The Roosters have a chance to
cut tin margin back to two games j
tomorrow (Friday) night but they
I will have* to beat the Roberson- i
ville Rams to do it. Should they I
lose to the Rams they will be put'
in a position where the very best j
they could hope for would be a
tie and the Cubs would have to I
lose all their remaining games to j
enable them to get a tie.
Both teams have some difficult
work i iit out for them. Oak City I
has another game to play with the
Rams in addition to the one Fri
day night while the Culxs are also
short one game with Roberson
ville and must play Williamston
next Sunday afternoon.
Should Oak City lose to Rober
sonville and Everetts win over the
Martins Sunday the race would
be over and Everetts would have
fourth plaee cinched. Ih this
event there is considerable doubt
it any of the other postponed con
tests would be played and the!
semi-finals would start about the j
! middle of the week.

With one away in the 6th inning

Bears. Roberson was safe on an
infield error thus loading the bas

First practice sessions of the
1948 season were held by the Wil
liamston High School Green Wave
football team Tuesday and Wed
nesday afternoons of this week.
Coach Stuart Maynard had about
three dozen candidates to put
through their paces Tuesday aft
ernoon and about thirty were on
hand for the drills Wednesday af
ternoon it was reported unoffic
ially. .. .
While he had candidates a
plenty it will take a report from
the coach himself to tell whether
he has any likely prospects among
the group other than those men
tioned before the season’s practice
sessions started. He is putting the
boys through stiff drills in all the
fundamentals, obviously deter
mined to find out who among the
group will be unable to take the
hard work that goes with making
a good football team.
Running, kicking, passing, punt
returning and tackling and block
ing were a part of the opening ses
sions. It is known that the coach
is looking for good passing and
punting material as the team last
year was none too strong on these
points and will be without tin- ser
vices of some of the men who
made it one of the most colorful
of high school teams from a spec
tator standpoint.
As soon as he has had a chance
to look them over he will prob
ably start lining up the men for
various positions and for substi
tutes in those positions. No out
standing players are likely to be
uncovered in the early practices
although if the field of candidates
remains large the coach may be
able to find material for a team
that will hold its own in this con
ference While Williamston lost
two good men, Rogerson and An
drews, by graduation and another
because of physical handicaps, the
other teams in the conference also
lost some good men.
According to the schedule the
Green Wave should have about
90 days of practice behind it when
it toes the mark for the first com
petitive kick-off in late Septem
ber.
One of the things adding more
than a little interest to the foot
ball setup this year is the fact
that the-games can be played un
der the lights and many fans who

Tom Browns towering drive that J
sent Wobbleton for cover in the j
eighth. Dan Peele relieved Wob
bleton with one out in the eighth
and allowed one run and two
singles.
Reid Bullock started for the
Rams, but gave way to Ross in the :

Large numbers of fans attended
out of town games last year that
