Already a selfish op position is devi loping while most of the peo ple in this county express little interest one way or the other. Too many are branding the program as nothing more than a spending spree. We had rather recognize the program as being an investment, for when a dollar is invested in the name of a fellow citizen it is not by any means thrown away. And those who live on the hardsurfaced highways and pav ed street should remember that thousands are not so fortunate, that they, too. would like to share in more of the advantages. It is unholy for anyone who lives on a surfac ed highway to. deny a similar opportunity to the follow livTig now on a muddy road. Let's be fair toward our fellowman and go for ward together. It is true *hat the program will cost much, but when wo compare the amount we are :oer.d'ng f r que-t ionable things with the i : on: t our lead* rs propose to invest in a ;o forward program for North Carolina, we ran meet the cost. There were tihose who opposed Cameron Morrison’s bond issue thir tv years ago, but that program paid off many timiard the current program can pud will do the same if the people will ap prove it on June 4. We arc sp. ...ling billions for war. Let us here in Ms :h Ca; bna inv<: t in and remem ber the forgotten man. /« T/iere j Dagger hi Lrisurr? [ By Ruth Taylor For years we have worked toward chang ing cur economy to enable everyone to have more leisure Adherents oi the shorter work week, the shorter work day, found their greatest appeal in that thdse would furnish more leisure. Thumb over any magazine. The advertisements blazon forth more leis ; ure time as tire greatest boon then oioducls can bring. The idea in itself is excellent— if that leisure be wisely used—but. never theless, there is an incipient danger therein. What is leisure? 'The dictionary dofini ti n is first, “freedom from necessary occu pation,” but there is a second definition, “time available for some particular purpose” —and there is where the catch lies. The totalitarian states organized leisure info a form of training: Every recreational activity was bent toward that one end. Men, women and children were regimented for one purpose—conquest—if not by undercov er activities and boring from within, then from war. The democracies made a god of leisure—and we have but to look at the map of Europe to see the results. Surely there is some huppy medium. Some way in which leisure may be made to follow its second definition without losing sight of the first. Leisure may follow this middle way if the individual—the prime factor in a democracy —will so apply his leisure that it works both for his advantage and for the good of all. What does this mean? It means .first us ing leisure to get physically and mentally fit. It means leisure to study, so that we may know more about the things that affect our daily lives, so that we may have under standing as we gain wisdom. It means lei.': ure to know people, that we may learrn how to work, as well as play, together. It means leisure to do tilings for others, not for what we may get, but for what we may give. If we turn our leisure into these channels, we can prove the worth of the great prin ciple of individual liberty of act and consci ence upon which our nation rests. We need then have no fear that the regimentation of oil the people wil come upon us from with out or from within, for we will have demon strated that the individual is not just a ma chine. but a thinking person, capable of as suming all the rights and the responsibilities that go with citizenship in a democracy. When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stone-cutter hammering away at his rick, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet, at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and T know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.— Jacob A. Riis.
