Some were dubious about the former president of the University of North Caro lina. but they soon learned that he did not hit below the belt, that he respected the fights of all and believed in humanity. He has gained the confidence of Ins colleagues With the possible exception of those who made it a point to light Roosevelt on every thing. Pearson is quoted ns saving about Gra ham: | Washington. Senator Frank Graham of North Carolina, who lias made as great an impression on Congress as any newcomer on Capital Hill; faces a tough reelection bat tle. Graham, a former president of the Uni- ' versity of North Carolina, has turned out to be a fine Senator, but is a babe-in-the-woods as far as politics is concerned. He doesn’t know how to slap fjaeks, raise money or roll logs. Furthermore, he gives so much of his mon- | Cv to charity that he lias almost no funds with which to run a campaign, and the other day had to borrow from his wife’s savings ! account. So far organized labor, whom he has supported, hasn’t lifted a finger to help, nor has there been even a whisper of help trom the White House- despite the fact that Graham has just as consistently supported President Truman as his Colleague, Senatoi j Hoey. has opposed hirn. Graham is opposed bv ex-Senator Bob Reynolds, the isolationist, whose daughter inherited a fortune from Mrs.Evalyn Walsh McLean of Hope Diamond fame; and by Willis Smith, former president of the Ameri can Bar Association, who has the backing of the big mill owners, the tobacco interests and the bankers. No one is running against Senator Hoey, who is expected Ih become an open Dixie rrat after the election. Note: Secretary of the Army Gordon Gray, who will replace Graham as president of the University of North Carolina, is staving neutral in the North Carolina rare hut !us family is harking Smith. Illllv ir nil'll II the United States was armed half as well as the Charlotte Baptist preacher was when he chose the topic, “Lets Talk About Sin,” for his sermon, it is fairly certain we could whip the work! and dust off ever so many of the heavenly planets. The doctor or divinity started out: “People spend eight times more hours at movies than at Sunday School; only one out of twelve persons in our country attends church; seven out of eight children cpiit both church and Sunday School attendance before they reach fifteen years of age; fif teen million ‘sex' magazines are printed monthly and read by one third of the Ameri can people; there are more barmaids in this country than college girls; one million One Million —- American girls have venereal di sease: 100,000 girls disappear every year into white slavery; one million illegitimate babies are horn annually; ther are almost a million illegal abortions performed annual ly; our nation harbors three times as many criminals as college students; a major crime is committed every 22 seconds; an aggravat ed assault or rape every hour; a murder every forty minutes; there are sixty suicides in our nation daily; two out of three adults, both men and women, smoke; three out of ton who start as light drinkers end up as drunkards; as a nation we spend about $750 on pleasure, sins, cosmetics, and amuse ments to every dollar given to Foreign Mis sions. Read— pray weep, as you consider America’s dreadful spiritual plight.’’ Just Unman ISaluro The fellow charging the* highest prices tor his labors or wares is the same fellow who complains about the other fellow’s high prices for his labors and wares. And he who does the least for his fellow man is the same fellow who condemns others for not doing more for their fellow men. CHURCF j NEWS BAFI1ST Stewart B Simms. Pastor. 9:45, Sunday school. 13.00.
