Jane Allyson la
New Fight Film
June Aliyson ana luck FVw'MTr
who scared an outstanding hit as
the comedy team of “The Reform
er and tin' Redhead," art together
again at the Viecar Theatre today
and Friday in M-G-M's “Right
Cross," engrossing drama of the
prizefight game, with Ricardo
Mnntaiban also starred in the role
of Johnny Monterez, middle
weight champion around whom
the story’s action centers.
Whereas in their former hit it ;
was Miss Aliyson who pursued
Diek Powell romantically, in the
present instance it is Powell, cast
as the happy-go-lucky sports writ
er Rick Gavery. who carries a
flaming torch for Pat O’Malley,
daughter of a one-time top pro
moter whose contract with John
ny is his only remaining hope of
regaining his lost prestige It is
Johnny whom Pat loves but when
the champ, obsessed by a sense of
social inferiority and determine- ■
tion to provide himself with se
curity. aligns himself with a rival
promoter. Pat turns to the waiting
arms of the torch-bearing Rick.
The conflict is resolved in the
story's tension-packed fight cli-U
max in which Johnny loses his j ‘
title hut regains both his self- 1
! respect and the sir! he loves.
; The natural inarm and warm
appeal which has made June Al
lvson one of the screen's top box
J office draws is again evident in
■ role the verac :• >us Pat
i O’Malley in which she has a fine
• opportunity to reveal both her
! talents as a touching dramatic
performer and that ingratiating
j quality of recreating the “girl
next door “ Dick Powell is hap
pily cast as the laconic sportswrit
er who only likes girls he can’t
cel, with Ricardo Mnntalban of
i fering one of his best portrayals
j to dare as the fighter who both
loses and wins his hist round Inci
dentally, Montalban is one actor
playing a fighter who looks the
part. Lionel Barrymore gives his
usual force and conviction to the
role of the discarded promoter,
with able supporting work con- '
tributed by Teresa Celli as the
champ's sister, Barry Kelley as a
prizefight czar and Tom Powers
as Johnny's lawyer.
Ricardo Montalban plays the prizefighter and June Allvson the lad?
who complicates his career and his heart in “Right Cross," M-G-M1'
exciting drama of the fight game, which comes to the Viccar screer
this week. Dick Powell also stars, as Montalban's rival, with Lione
Barrymore heading the supporting cast.
Sooth Sea Isle
Locale For Film
A mythical South Seas paradise
provides an exotic background for
Realart’s “Cobra Woman," latest 1
Technicolor production to star the i
popular trio, Maria Montez, Jon
Hall fend SaV>u. The exciting new
screen adventure comes Saturday
J to the M^rco Theatre. Featured
in a distinguished supporting cast
are Edgar Barrier, Lois- Colliei
and Mary Nash, Moroni Oisefi
Samuel S. Hinds and Lon Chance
have leading roles.
Action of the picturesque drama
centers around the romantic af
fairs of a glamorous princess and
hei' twin sister. Miss Monte/ is
seen in both portrayals. The ac
tress, who scored outstanding suc
cesses in "Arabian Nights” and
"White Savage,” is said to be even
more colorfully attractive in “Co
bra Woman." Sequences in which
her dancing highlights primitive
rituals, are described as vividly
spectacular.
Hall is seen as a valorous islan
der who helps to stage a rebellion
against a cruel monarch and her
unscrupulous Minister of Affairs.
Lurid sacrificial rites and intrigue
among the court followers are
dramatic preludes to the conspi
racy in which the twin of the
princess is restored to the throne.
