Feasting has always been an important part of the celebration of New Year’s and menus differ around the world. The holiday fowls of the Latin countries are bedecked with truffles, chestnuts and olives and one might find snails on a menu in France. An important dish among the Spaniards is sopa, rice cooked with oiive oil, tomatoes, vege tables and meat particles. Afri cans partake of cous-cous, which is composed of wheat grains, lamb and vegetables. Pickled greens, raw fish, roast bird and shrimp fritters are head liners among the Japanese, with pickled chrysanthemum petals considered a delicacy. That even ing at 10:00 o'clock, Marines Smith and Abel were standing at the intersection of 04 and 17 in Williamston, using the old thumb method. Finding U. S. 17 asleep, the young men switched to U. S. 301 and were last seen in Rocky Mount, feverishly working their thumbs and looking toward the north in freezing weather Then there was the little fellow who had traveled all the way from Colorado. He had made his way as far as Wilson where he learned shortly before midnight 'that there was no more public transportation to his home town of Kenly until the next morning at 3:40 o'clock. During the mean time, he learned that the wash room in one of Wilson’s hotels had been locked up for the night There was a fourth serviceman whose mother in New Jersey, af ter seeing the crash of a big air liner that cost the lives of 04 per sons, had advised him to stay off planes even if it meant, walking home. He finally made it to Wil son where he caught a midnight train about 2:30 o'clock. During the meantime, the long silver streak trains literally “flew” north and south without even stopping.
