New Year Banquet
Shows Variations
All Around World
-C*.
Feasting has always been an
important part of the celebration
of New Year’s and menus differ
around the world.
The New Year s Day bouquet in
England and Western Europe is
similar to our American feast,
chief difference being in the
choice of side dishes. Turkey,
duck or goose makes the popular
roast in England, with plum pud
ding topping off the meal.
Turkey is again found in France,
although capon and pheasant are
as popular. The holiday fowls of
the Latin countries are bedecked
with truffles, chestnuts and olives
and one might find snails on a
menu in France.
An important dish among the
Spaniards is sopa, rice cooked
with oiive oil, tomatoes, vege
tables and meat particles. Afri
cans partake of cous-cous, which
is composed of wheat grains,
lamb and vegetables.
Pickled greens, raw fish, roast
bird and shrimp fritters are head
liners among the Japanese, with
pickled chrysanthemum petals
considered a delicacy. The Swedes
temper their feast with a special
'drink callege glogg, which is a
claret wine sweetened with sugar
and flavored with almonds, rai
j sins, dried orange peel, cinnamon,
cloves and cardamon It is usually
set afire before serving.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
These words will soon ring around the world, but It won’t sound the
same everywhere.
For Instance, should you be In gay Paree, this Is the greeting: "Bon
ne Annee!” Across the wsrters in Spain, natives say, “Feliz Ano Nuevo!”
In sunny Italy, it’s "Buon Capo d’Anne!"
Most of the afiove greetings we can almost decipher. It Is the salute
of countries like Germany, Norway and Sweden that are sharp tongue
: twisters For example, Germans wish a happy new year with. ”Ein
Glueckliches Neues Jahr.” Sweden and Norway are a little simpler,
but still ticklish. The Swedes say, "Got Nytt Ar”, and the Norse ' Godi
Nytt Aar.”
None-the-less, It sUU means, "Happy New Year.”
Production of toal in Spanish
mines in the first four months of
1951 amounted to' 3.037.000 tons,
equivalent to less than two days
production in privately-owned
U. S. mines.

Old Irish Started
'Baking the Cake'
-«
Old Erin had one of the most
unusual New Year’s day celebra
tions to be found anywhere. Call
ed “baking the cake”, it was a
favorite with Irish peasants
Proud husbands would invite
ail their friends over to partici
pate in the ceremony and partake
of the “gude woman’s baking.”
When the cake was fully pre
pared, the eldest son took it and
hurled it with all his force against
the doi r Everyone scrambled to
pick up the pieces, for, according
to the superstition, he who picked
up the first fragment to touch the
floor would have a home and a
New Year’s cake to share the next
year.
The Soil Conservation Service
was created liy Congress in 1935.
Soldiers' Problem
In Transportation
Pit - Christmas transportation
got all snarled up for many ser
vicemen, and others, too. Ice
covered fields in the East and late
train schedules caused some to
wonder if they would be able to
reach home for the holiday.
Bob Smith and Jack Abel, sta
tioned at Cherry Point, managed
to pick a free flight to their home
in New York All were happy
that morning when they “took
off" for Floyd Bennett Field. As
they neared Philadelphia, they
were advised that no landings
were being made at Floyd Ben
nett. There were no landings at
Philadelphia either, so the plane
returned to its base. That even
ing at 10:00 o'clock, Marines
Smith and Abel were standing at
the intersection of 04 and 17 in
Williamston, using the old thumb
method. Finding U. S. 17 asleep,
the young men switched to U. S.
301 and were last seen in Rocky
Mount, feverishly working their
thumbs and looking toward the
north in freezing weather
Then there was the little fellow
who had traveled all the way
from Colorado. He had made his
way as far as Wilson where he
learned shortly before midnight
'that there was no more public
transportation to his home town
of Kenly until the next morning
at 3:40 o'clock. During the mean
time, he learned that the wash
room in one of Wilson’s hotels had
been locked up for the night
There was a fourth serviceman
whose mother in New Jersey, af
ter seeing the crash of a big air
liner that cost the lives of 04 per
sons, had advised him to stay off
planes even if it meant, walking
home. He finally made it to Wil
son where he caught a midnight
train about 2:30 o'clock. During
the meantime, the long silver
streak trains literally “flew”
north and south without even
stopping.

Christmas Shopping
Up To Expectations
Williamston merchants had one
of their best Christmas shopping
season’s, according to reports
from a cross section of local busi
ness establishments. Business in
general was even better than gen
orally expected, according to most
reports.
Crowds tm the streets during
the week preceding Christmas
were large, and traffic from one
store to another was heavy. Toys
and other special Christmas gilt
merchandise were reported to
have moved in good volume, and
it is understood that carry-overs
will l)t' small in niiisl sioies.
Shoppers bought heavily of
practical items for fts, it is re
ported, in adidtion to toys and
other gift merchandise Furniture
dealers especially reported busi
ness as better than a year ago, and
there were some big items in the
lot bought as gifts for entire fam
ilies. Appliance dealers also did
well with faintly gift items.
Buying power generally was
i betti i than last year. Farm crops
I were bettei this year, yields be
ing considerably above those of
a year ago, while prices were as
'good nr better than last year.

Did Washington
Hold Open House?
—.t>—
American historians credit
George Washington with starting
the custom of receiving friends, or
holding “open house'’ on New
Year's day
In the year 1790 New York was
the seat of the government and 1
President Washington made a i
practice of opening the doors of |
the presidential mansion for a re
ception on each New Year’s day.
Home and foreign diplomats, and
ordinary citizens as well, visited.
Washington was said to have
expressed the hope that the ob
servance might continue through
the years. Mis wish was granted,
for it is still a custom at thf White
House.
